The biggest issue on the long trips isn't the fuel consumption, but rather the small tank and limited range when you're not regularly charging. And when you're on the autobahn doing 100mph+ it's even worse! You end up filling up at are around the 250 mile mark, which means at least 3 fuel stops going from Southern England to Poland.
