I've seen my range go to 0 several times in a previous generation 3 Series that has a 15.8 gallon tank and the maximum amount of fuel I've ever been able to pump is 14.6 gallons.
Hope this helps.
This has always been true for all my other cars but not my 2020 M340i.

My owner's manual says I have a 15.6 gallon tank and when my computer says I have 4 miles left, it held 15.5 gallons. I know it's bad to go really close to empty but based on every other car I've ever had, when it read "0 miles to empty" I expected 1 to 1.5 gallons of reserve.

This car literally tells you when it's empty. It's very hard to see "50 miles to go" and actually go fill up bc I'm conditioned to believe there's an extra 30 miles of range beyond that 50.
