So great!! Back when F1 was "affordable." 35+ cars would show up for a race when there were only 30 spots or 28 spots. The slower cars had to pre-qualify to even be able to take place in qualifying. This is where the 107% rule got its start!!

Back in those days it seemed like anyone could rock up with a Cosworth engine in the back of an F1 car and try to prequalify.
I just watched a bit of the 1988 Monaco qualifying on youtube...those were some great looking cars, wide and low and sounded epic. Must have been pretty tough to drive with a stick shift.
