As an aussie in Canada i am astounded at the cost of auto insurance, it's preposterous. We are paying $3,200 for a 2008 9-3 and a 2012 X1. No accidents or tickets.
But, the mandatory coverages in Canada are so much higher (both first party accident benefits and third party liability). That's partly why our rates are so much higher. There's also the medical system clawbacks built into our rates (auto insurers pay all medical visits associated with car accidents in most Canadian jurisdictions from GP visits, to therapists, to MRIs, etc). There's a lot of stuff built into our rates that aren't in other countries.

Here in BC, because basic auto must be purchased from the government insurer (ICBC), auto insurance also pays for our driver and vehicle licensing system, as well as certain road improvements, Counter-Attack, etc. Even with that, my wife and I are paying less than you are for her 2010 A3 and my 2016 M235i and I do have an at fault accident from 2012 on my record.
