The car was designed to be a high performance sport sedan which is track ready. Similar to the M3, but only better performing. The track mode software was always planned, and rolled out after the launch - something Tesla does constantly, and the cars just keep getting better and better.

If by track ready you mean it doesn't have a punishing ride, then you may be right. If the car is beating a 458 Italia and Guilia Quadrifoglio, it's enough of a track car to me.
