Okay, so those lines appear when you're in the high range of revs basically, close to the shift point.
I assume they appear then to sort of catch your attention that it's time to shift, but also to offer a "fine tuning" of when you shift since it looks like it's pretty granular in how many rpm each segment corresponds to.
