I tend to see the E90 320is as a one time blooper and not a structural "is" problem. For instance the e36 318is was a well sorted car back then in 1992.
The advantage of "is" is that it is exactly clarifies what it is, a normal "i" with some adjustments to make it a more focussed car. It's not a half soft M lacking the focus the badge suggests.
