This. The problem is that we don't really understand the effects of radiation on human bodies in low doses. Every object gives off a certain amount of radiation, not just blown up reactors.

It's not just Chernobyl that scared people, it's 3 mile island and all of those bomb explosions in the desert where we hand soldiers a pair of glasses and asked them to look at the light. It all adds up to public misunderstanding of the science and engineering.
