why would Mercedes do that? i think because Michael Schumacher could accelerate the development of a Formula 1 car faster and more effectively than any driver ever.
while his race results at Mercedes were certainly less than spectacular, i never thought that was why he was hired.
I spent the German GP with the team as their guest in 2012 as they were transitioning. They managed to make the car fast over one lap but could never tackle the rear tires overheating to satisfaction. This problem plagued them when Lewis joined the team in 13. I recall him going backwards after a great qualifying and saying, "WTF is with this thing." After a year with Lewis on the team, the tires stopped overheating and even after the FRIC was outlawed, the rears were minimally a problem but not to the level they were in 2010 through 2013. As Paddy Lowe stated with regard to testing with Lewis, "When we get the car back from Lewis, we know every bit of performance has been extracted from the car. I can't say that for other drivers."

Looking forward to 7ewis.
