disclaimer: I am no coding guru - in fact I am about as far from that as you can get -which is a good thing because it means bimmercode is easy :-)
For iphone (and I assume other operating systems) Bimmercode can be downloaded from the app store. You'll then need to get (amazon probably easiest) an adapter to go from your phone to the OBD2 connection on your car. You want to avoid a wireless connection for now in that it seems only a wired adapter gives you access to all the options (this was my experience trying my old wireless connection and then moving to wired).

ps- you can grab bimmercode right now and start to play around with all the options from the comfort of your couch using demo mode - also there is a coding section here on the forums with some really smart people that have some wonderfully cool info to share
