I believe it's because it was perceived to make it harder to see objects down the passenger side of the car when it dimmed. I'm not sure if this was of BMW's own volition or a regulation was created to force them and other manufacturers to do it. |
I can't find any new regulation that prevents the the passenger side mirror from dimming, so I'm assuming it's a voluntary engineering decision, in the name of safety.
However, I recently sat in a new $120,000 Mercedes S550, with every single option, even a fridge in the trunk and I had notice that even in that vehicle, the passenger side mirror also does not dim, so its anyone's guess what's the true reason.. 🤷🏻..
