I have an M340i and this is my third in-line 6 turbo. The main reason I love this power plant isn't so much peak power. It's in fact the amount of power I have in the RPM band I usually use, which is 2000-4000 RPM.

I test drove the 330i and it's a great car. It's quick, but you have to rev up a lot more to get that. Some people like that and it's fine.
