In short for every 1 gram of car emissions above 95g/km EU target, BMW pays fine of 95 Euro. M340xi is 181 - 197g/km, thats up to 102g above target. 102 x 95 = 9690 Euro per car registered in EU. Manufacturer can offset that fine by selling also cars below 95g/km target or pooling with other manufacturers but at the end it will add quite a lot to cost of those performance BMW cars.
If EU would skip all these emission penalty Bull**** and just leave us alone to have fun for cheap it would be a much better place. We dont even get pops on example the 330i, while in the US they do, due to sound regulations or what ever idiotic regulation it could be.
