You're right, the M5 did follow the 5 Series very closely this time. In fact, it was the quickest turnaround ever between those two models. Less than a year separated them.

Remember, however, that the M5 does not have a coupe brother with which it shares styling. On the other hand, the M3 does, or at least has for the past two generations, and for that reason BMW elected to hold off its launch in both of those cases so that the two siblings can be introduced together. A 2021 launch date, if true, would simply mean that BMW has decided to go that same route again. So no big surprise here. This has always been one likely timeline - arguably the most likely - out of just two or three legitimately possible ones.
