You mean the low oil warning?
It's possible yours might of been an isolated case with the bad sensor but in my experience, with a bad oil level sensor, the oil reading is just incomplete, not overstated.
The overfill oil reserve can explain by an overzealous tech who added too much oil before measuring the current level.

However, this oil burning issue is common amongst the B58 motor.
As you see, it's a very common occurrence amongst a lot of owners. That can't just be a coincidence and had it been a mass defect or correctable via the a sensor, BMW would of addressed it by now.
