You have to go all the way back to the E28 to find a 5 series with similar dimensions as the F30. I know cars are getting bigger, but they're also getting much safer and more powerful. Also, at the rate we're going, we are pretty close to the weight of the E36. The E36 328i which made 190hp is about 100 lbs lighter than the F30 320i which makes about the same power. Yes, the 320i uses a 4 cylinder, but it also uses a far superior 8 speed auto vs the 4 speed auto (or 5 speed vs 6 speed manual). Adding another couple hundred pounds for a 300hp I6 (~50% more power for only <10% more weight), I think, is not a bad deal.
