Getting M steering wheel buttons to work on an G22

I recall reading its possible to have the M steering wheel buttons coded to work on a non M car. Did it also need some kind of extra hardware module? Would love to get that new LCI steering from M4 swapped into my M440i. I suppose alternately I could just get the one from the LCI M440 as well but I figure if I'm going to upgrade anyways why not get some extra functionality.
