Engine Starter Recall 2nd try

If the NHTSA Safety Recall ID 24V-576 was applicable for your vehicle, the remedy may not be sufficiently effective and the 25V644 recall announced in late Sep/25 may also apply. See attached.

The remedy for this new recall is to replace your vehicle's engine starter. It would appear my 2020 M340iX will be getting a new starter.

Appears this recall remedy is to replace the engine starter only.

BMW has also released a similar recall but for their 4 cylinder engine.

My 06/19 build W vin RWD is under the recall. SA claims no official word yet on the recall aside from replacing the starter. I did have the first recall performed.

The notation I received states no remedy. However it says 11/17/25 so I do not know if the dealers have spare starters yet.. Did anyone speak to a dealer? Thanks

Spoke to my dealer a couple days ago, confirmed a recall, said to wait until BMW notifies me of the recall and the dealer is sent the new starters.

Has anyone heard any news on this? BMW site still basically says no remedy available.. meanwhile we as customers need to be aware of the thing spontaneously catching fire at any moment. If mine does in my garage, they can rebuild my house, I'm coming at them lawyers blazing. Limiting where I can park it was never part of the original terms of sale, so they best make good fast on this.

Best to talk to your dealer about.

But worth keeping in mind, the risk theoretically existed since when the cars were produced, it's not like the issue appeared after the notification, it existed forever. The risks seems to be pretty small, I personally haven't seen reports of g20 catching fire (yet) here on the forum or facebook groups.
And taking into account reproduction steps or symptoms of the previous recall (where they initially tried to fix it just with a software update), the car will usually show signs before, like failed attempts at starting the engine.

My dealer's service department converted to some AI agent system that promises a human callback and never delivers. I hope that's not coming from BMW corporate or this brand is done. I had to go to a custom shop recently for service for simply not being able to get in touch with the dealer when I needed them.

Even if it's not a brand-wide problem, my experience with the service department will make it difficult for me to stay with the brand when shopping for my next car.

Service experience is everything.

Dealers in Canada now have parts to perform the engine starter replacement recall

I received notice earlier this week in the mail from BMW Canada that I can now book an appointment with my Dealer to perform the latest engine starter recall.

My dealer performed the recall today. The process took ~ 1.5 hrs.

So I got the starter recall service last year when they first started talking about it—but it was well before Sept. 2025. Either early 2025 or late 2024 when it first became an issue. Do I have to do it again?

My vehicle had two recalls relating to the engine starter. The first was a DME SW updated (in the 2nd half of 2024) that was insufficient in addressing the root cause so a 2nd recall was issued late last year that involved replacing the starter.

Search using the NHTSA website (https://www.nhtsa.gov/) to determine of the 2nd engine starter recall applies to your vehicle.

I see. Damn. Thank you, Larry! Now back to wondering if I’ll have re-unlock the DME. Almost pulled the trigger on the MHD unlock kit last time around.

The latest starter recall does not touch your DME. The tune on my DME was not affected with this recall. I don't think the dealer even hooked-up ISTA to my vehicle. The remedy is to replace the engine starter only.

I just had mine done a few weeks ago and can confirm they did not touch software. I don’t have a tune but have some features coded with BimmerCode and my sw version and coding didn’t change.

I did a drop off but the car was done in less than 2h.

I just checked the NHTSA website and it just says that the recall status is "incomplete" for my 330i. This is recall 26V056 for the starter. I thought that they would contact me, but I guess I need to contact them to see what's happening.

Had mine replaced today along with a new battery on my 2020 M340i. It took 1.5hrs. I have a great dealership that I've used since the late 80's.

Had my starter done yesterday. Had ASS coded off so my starter wasn’t really used and I never had any problems. That said the new starter does some to start a little easier.
