(100%) SA5AU Driving Assistant Professional aka DAP w/ SA5AR TJA Retrofit DIY

I would like to share my latest retrofit Driving Assist Professional as i promised on social media platforms.

This is the first fully detailed 5AU retrofit in the world.

My vehicle 2019 330i . iLevel 11/2023.50. Came with following features :

S544, S5AL, 5AS, 5AV, 5DN

When i first got the vehicle did not even had AA (Android Auto) and built in Spotify or Alexa. After updating the vehicle to 2022.57 (OFFLINE), run the diagnostic in BMW Dealer, Android Auto came to life immediately. Then after going back and forth with BMWConnected Drive they cancel my subscription since it was having the older version of the MGU. They reactivated with the new version and i gain all the features (Screenshot will be at the end of this page). Then decided to add this amazing feature since the vehicle already had omnidirectional camera system.

Project :

1) SA5AU Active Driving Assistant Professional

The option "Driving Assistant Professional" (SA 5AU) in BMW includes the following driver assistance systems:

• Distance Control (ACC with Stop&Go)
• Traffic light detection
• Front Collision Warning with brake intervention
• Evasion Assistant
• Automatic Speed Limit Assist
• Rear Collision Prevention
• Crossroads Warning with brake intervention
• Steering and Lane Control Assistant
• Hazard alert (with BMW Live Cockpit Professional (SA 6U3))
• Emergency Stop Assistant, Crossing-traffic Warning
• Emergency Lane Assistant, Speed Limit Display with no-overtaking indicator
• Speed Limit Device
• Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection (with BMW Live Cockpit Professional (SA 6U3))
• Lane Departure Warning with lane return
• Lane Change Assistant
• Lane Change Warning
• Road Priority Warning

(Please note: Depending on the country of delivery, model, production date, software version and equipment of your BMW, the range of functions of the option "Driving Assistant Professional" (SA 5AU) as well as the operating principle of individual driver assistance systems may vary.)

The BMW Active Assistant Driving Professional with Highway Assistant brings a plethora of features designed to enhance the highway driving experience:

1. Lane Keeping Assistant: The system uses cameras to detect lane markings and ensures that the vehicle remains centered within the lane. It gently corrects the steering if the vehicle begins to drift.
2. Adaptive Cruise Control: Maintaining a set speed is just the beginning. The system uses radar to adjust your speed based on the flow of traffic, maintaining a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead.
3. Automatic Lane Change: A remarkable feature that lets the car change lanes on its own after the driver signals their intent. The system checks for an appropriate gap and executes the maneuver safely.
4. Evasion Aid: In case of an impending collision with a vehicle ahead, the system assists the driver by steering around the obstacle while also avoiding vehicles in adjacent lanes.
5. Traffic Jam Assistant: The perfect companion for congested traffic, this feature takes care of acceleration, braking, and steering, reducing the stress of stop-and-go traffic.

SA5AU also includes 5DF and 5AS option so when you do the coding 5AS and/or 5DF has to be removed from the VO after 5AU is added to VO.

5AU uses FRR-02 Long Range Radar sensor unlike the older 5AT (Active Driving Assistant Plus) with FRR-01 Short Range.

What we need to accomplish this retrofit on any G series?

Before I list all the hardware equipments, have to mention that the most important part of this project is FSC injection. As you all know that the FSCs for KAFAS4 High was the major issue.

KAFAS4 High Required FSC for this Project :

• AppID 432 (0x1B0) - High-Beam assistant (Required)
• AppID 333 (0x14D) - Lane departure warning (Required)
• AppID 334 (0x14E) - Speed Limit Info (Required)
• AppID 335 (0x1AD) - Right way warner (Optional)
• AppID 336 (0x150) - High assist premium (Optional)

SRSNVL-SRSNVR-HRSNL-HRSNR :

Diagram :

1- Front Bumper Removal and Radar Installation :

All the 10mm bolts around the wheel arch and under the bumper needs to be removed. After that remove the wheel trims half way to access to 2 hidden 10mm bolts under the wheel arch on each side.

The left side (driver side) of the bumper has wiring harness and has to be removed before dropping the bumper. After the bumper removed you will see the short range radar housing on both side. Route the OEM wiring harness w/ L/R which is marked on the plugs, then follow the driver side vent and route all the way to firewall which is on the driver side as well.

• Remove the mid section (mesh grill) of the bumper by unclipping the tabs and install the ACC trim.
• Before you install the ACC Bracket, install the FRR-02 with the cover which has heating element. Make sure it is clicked in place
• Plug the FRR and heating element
• Use 2x10mm bolts to install the bracket. Do not tighten up yet.
• Put the front bumper back in place. After the bumper in place, make sure radar is aligned in between well then tighten up the bolts.

2- Trunk and Rear Bumper Removal :

Trunk :

• Remove the cover that is on the bottom of the trunk.
• Remove the plastic clips which is holdind the plastic cover around the latch and pull the cover up
• Remove the side carpets by removing the plastic clips.
• There will be T40 on each side closer to the seat side
• Remove the carpet by unhooking the side where the trunk engaged (It is hold by plastic cover)
• Pull the carpet
• Passenger side has cigarette lighter so do not forget to remove the plug
• Remove the side leather covers at the back seats where seat belts are coming over.

Rear Bumper :

• Remove the plastic cover which is installed to hide outer tail light bolts (2x10mm)
• Inside of the trunk you will see a single bolt holding the outer tail light on each side (8mm), Remove that.
• Remove the tail light
• You will see a 10mm bolt holding the bumper , remove that. The main reason you are removing the tail light is there is a plastic which is clipped to bumper. It is safe way to gap the clips after the tail light removal.
• Remove the 10mm bolts inside the wheel arch and on the bottom of the bumper
• The trick is there is a cover in between bumper to muffler. Remove that cover and unclip the painted part from the black holder which the SMO is installed .
• Slowly uclip the bumper starting from the edge where close to wheels.
• Make sure to unplug the PDC plug. (driver side)
• The main reason of the rear bumper removal was the wiring is done differently on 5AS comparing to 5AU. Since I also got the rear wiring harness, I was able to match all the wiring by looking at the diagrams and the wires that is left on the harness , used for the PMA and TRSVC to SAS3 connection

3-SAS3 + FRR-02 + SRSNVL – SRSNVR Wiring :

• After removing driver door sill and the plastic trim which is behind the hood handle, it is easy to remove the carpet. I have placed my SAS3 module on one of the bolt that was already there and let the carpet smash it so it moves no where !
• SAS3 also comes with factory harness so route that cable all the way to the trunk.
• You will need to add 6 pin to the SAS3 which comes from the front radars. Each radar has 2 wires to connect on SAS3 plug.
• Keep the cover of the plug undone, you will need to pin more cables from the rear end. If you do have, PMA and 360 camera then it will be total of 4 , otherwise it will be only rear short radar sensors which is not connected to SAS3.
• FRR-02 has only 4 wires. 2 of them Positive and Ground and the other 2 goes to SAS3 with its Ethernet cables
• Once you follow all the wiring diagram you will be installing all this modules to SAS3 and preparing the vehicle for programming stage.

4- Steering Wheel Removal :

• Make sure battery is removed before you start this process. I have checked the entire trunk to fins additional battery so I assumed there is only one. Then after removing the negative cable of the battery car was still up another 10 min, I am lik they must put a real big capacitor. Well after the whole car shut down I removed the airbag which was pain in the butt since the holes are hidden and youtube video I watched wasn’t too helpful. But what I found out is G20 has another battery on the front passenger side under the plastic cover. AUX battery what was keeping the car on for a long time. It is not too important since I have done this on my F85 several times without removing the AUX battery but now I know it is not he big capacitor what keeps the car on after main one is removed.
• After the Airbag removed, remove the center 16mm bolt

a. If you are also retrofitting 5AC like I did you will need to remove the SZL :
i. Remove the plugs that is connected to SZL
ii. Remove the Steering wheel
iii. Remove the plastic cover that is surrounded around the SZL
iv. Mark the Clock Spring before you remove the SZL from its place.(You can either use a marker or blue tape)
v. Then remove 10mm bolts around the SZL (4 of them)
vi. Slowly remove the SZL and do not forget to unplug the plugs (2 of them)
vii. Separate the Clock Spring from the Stalk unit by unclipping all plastic clips
viii. Since my vehicle came with Cruise Control with Braking + Parking Assist Plus (5DN) My SZL is already compatible with the 5AU Self Driving so I did used my Original SZL. If yours is not compatible please get the correct SZL before you assembly the unit.
ix. SZL with Driving Assistant Professional + High Beam Assist + Heater : 61319436668
x. After the swap install the SZL Back

b. If you are not going to retrofit the 5AC High Beam Assist you can just skip the “step a” and disassembly the sterring wheel.
c. Remove the shifters by unscrewing the T20s. Remove the bolts that is holding the silver trim. Remove the bolts that is holding the buttons. Remove the Silver trim which has clips all around and replace with the new one which is compatible with led lights.
d. Replace the buttons and install the new silver trim. Before you install the plugs that is made for the buttons, install the emulator on to the same plug and plug the buttons on that additional plug which comes with emulator. HOD Emulator is a must for a wheel that is not came with the HOD. I have 2x330i . One came with 5AU and it requires to touch on the wheel every 30 sec. which is really annoying. I saw some people uses water bottles to overwrite it. Be honest I am not playing backgammon while car drives itself so its never an issue for me. I am always watching the car where it goes. HOD emulator which I also have my F85 and never had any issue. Much better than factory wheels IMPO. But if you are not happy with this, get yourself a steering wheel with HOD so you can make a factory style!
e. Before you place the steering wheel back in place follow the next procedure :

5- DCS Installation (Driver Camera System) :

• First thing is remove the air vent trims from the Driver and Passenger side. Access to 2xT20s to remove the Cluster bezel.
• After Removing the bolts, DO NOT separate the bezel from the cluster. It will cause you to break the clips on the bezel (Don’t ask me how I know) .
• Instead, GAP the cluster starting from the bottom and pull towards you. Then un hook the top part and slowly pull the cluster out.
• After cluster removed, Go ahead and remove the bezel.
• After removing the FAKRA + Plug, Put the cluster on a soft surface and install the DCS camera module on top of it.
• Good thin is Cluster already came with pre-holes for the DCS so you can simply screw the bolts that came with and done with it.
• Now the trick part is here. You will need to measure the bezel by looking at the DCS camera to cut a whole on the bezel since the camera sticking out, will not allow original bezel to work with. Or you can order a original one.
• After the DCS in place, make sure the plug that came with works for the module. The one I got came with slightly different. I had to shave the plastic in order to make the plug work. Took me about 5 min to modify. But all good
• If you look at the diagram you will see Pin 1-2 needs to attach to the DCS from the Head Unit. Luckily the same pins were already on the cluster. Simply remove them and attach to the plug that is came with the DCS. So that way no need to remove any trim around the HU. Because removing the HU on G Series requires for you to remove the entire mid console which would be real pain! But no needed.
• Route the DCS wires nicely to passenger side through the vent openings (Make sure not to block any vent)
• DCS is the only module we are going to power on with the front fuse box. Rest of the modules will be on the rear fuse box. And G20 is amazing when the thing comes to the fuse boxes. Not even a single bolt to remove it. And you do not need to remove the Glove Box either. Just snap the fuse box after removing the foot well cover on passenger side. That’s it!

6- R11 CAN Terminator :

It took me sometime to find the Terminator. So I am marking here for you to find a lot quicker than I did!

Programming :

Open the Esys. Connect to the car. Delete the 5AS. Add 5AU + 5AR . If you also doing the HBA add 5AC as well.
Save the FA to the car. Then Calculate the TAL on Comfort Mode. Before you flash any module, Go to Expert/VCM and save the SVT soll to the SVT_Target!

Then Go to Expert TAL Processing. Select DCS + SRR + SAS and Flash it. After the flash Done, VO Code the entire car. Delete all the errors. That’s it.
Congratulations. You now have fully functional Driving Assistant Professional.

After the VO Coding Process the fun features :

Wow, wow, wow! Amazing job, huge round of applause!! You have just provided some amazing information to the community.

I had just reached out to a company based in Malaysia about doing this retrofit. They quoted me $3600 plus shipping for all the parts for my specific model (minus the windshield). This included coding and they provide installation instructions. My only hesitation was finding someone in the states, preferably close to me in Tennessee, that could perform all the work.

Thank you brother. I will be cheaper than that and minus windshield. But i will give you all a trick. My insurance did not pay for the windshield and i am like okay. I found my closest dealer and ask them the price and they came up with $1100 + tax for the part number i have provided above. I said it is little bit expensive. I hang up and went to google, found the same windshield $567 in a bmw dealer which is located in Atlanta. I called back my dealer again told them , BMW Dealer selling cheaper than what you sell. They googled it and realized it is also a BMW Dealer. They Price match including shipping cost from Atlanta and the windshield cost me $650 including tax. Luckily they had 1 in the stock. Local Windshield installer picked up from the dealer. Came and install with a NO WARRANTY document : )

I actually found that same one last night!

Where are you located? I’ve been seriously considering doing this retrofit for a long time now. Would you mind messaging me your total price for everything? Are you also offering installation or no? I can send you my VIN if you need it.

I have everything except motorized trunk, tire & cooling package…and this, DAP. It’s the one I regret not buying. I would love to see what it takes to install on a 2023! I thought it might be easier since I have the parking assist package…i haven’t even tried it yet 👀

Onur hocam,

My car doesn't have 5DN Parking Assistant but has the other options in your car. Do you know if any of 5DN added equipment is necessary for 5AU full functionality?

Retrofitting 5DN should be easier anyway since it won't require windscreen change I believe. But wanted to double check.

Also, how much was this retrofit all said and done?

Thank you for this. I was hoping someone in the US would do this eventually. This DIY is in-depth and is an excellent contribution to the community. Hopefully one day soon i will be able to purchase the equipment from you. Of course except for the windshield. I dont see it mentioned so im just curious- were the new blind spot mirriors plug n play or were additional wires needed to illuminate the blind spot warning? Again, thank you.

Appreciate it brother. The blind spot requires a new mirror electronic in order to run the led on the mirrors. It is inside of the mirror. I have done couple retrofits with the mirrors before. Only the side cameras are not part of the mirror electronic. Rest of the features like Blind Spot, Heater, Electrochromic and even the folding mechanism connected to that.

First of all, many thanks for the excellent work and all the effort you put into sharing that with the community.

I'm planning to retrofit the lower version of ACC, the 5DF: I was wondering if you had to modify anything on the R11 Can Bus terminator, like adding a resistor which was not present? The retrofit on the G30 here https://www.drive2.ru/l/534306577079861964/ pointed out at this issue.

Thanks.

No i have not added anything like resistor other than required pins in place. Also Lower version (5AT + 5AR) requires FSC on KAFAS as far as i know. Good luck!

Would you be interested in offering your services remotely?
What I have in mind is sending you my vin, getting back a list o parts and tools required for the operation and later after everything is mounted, guidance with the coding.
Ofc you decide if payment by hour or by job.
I created this account after seeing this post, the level of DIY is insane, thank you for providing all this info for us mortals .
Regardless of your decision, and i mean what I say, huge respect for your work and achievement !

Thank you. If you get all your parts from ebay, you will still need to ship me the KAFAS to get FSC done! Or i can provide you only KAFAS with FSC and ship to your address. After the installation done, i can remotely program the car. Programming will be a set price. PM me when you are ready. If you want me to send you the complete kit, just click the shopping page and done! Price including FSC + Programming!

Any region and G series can be retrofitted. Dependency is what options your car came from the factor and what hardwares are missing to complete the project. You can provide a VIN and I can give you what you need for this Project.

prokup I am European myself ( no Romania jokes please ) )
I know the system works for us in Europe, I am however curious if we have geo-fencing, as from youtube, I understood that some places have some sort of artificial lock and you cannot use the system.

SaNGRia Wonderful, if I'm not mistake, you need only the latest 7 digits for the configuration of the car , right ? FH86069
I am currently unable to PM, as my account is new.
Regarding the pieces and all, I might be able to sort some things cheaper locally and then the only thing that would be left would be the kafas module, and most probably the wiring.
Anyway, from what i gathered there are 2 variants as of now :
1. The entire package which is 3200 $ + shipping , and then your time for coding/guidance
2. Buying kafas 750$ + shipping + coding/guidance , and after getting a list of requirements based on the car , the price of the parts sourced locally.

This really got me pumped as my previous car had openpilot, and I used it A LOT.

Anyway, thank you for the reply !
