Retrofit G09 XM gear selector into G2x

Hi there,

i want to give you an update on the topic of retrofitting a G09 XM gear selector into a G2x.
Does it work? Yes!
Does everything work? No!

The retrofit is a direct plug&play work that probably don´t need coding and where you can´t code anything.

What does work?
Shifting between R, N and D
Getting into M using the paddles
Getting back into D by holding the upshift paddle
Engaging P
Traction / DSC
Side View
Surround View
Eco Pro (Setup)
Comfort (M Mode)
Sport (M Hybrid)
Autohold
Parking brake

What does not work?
Adaptive (Exhaust button)
Getting into S
Switchting between D and M with the gear knob

What´s without any functonality?
Drive Logic rocker
Exhaust button

Can i still use Adaptive?
Yes, by using the voice control.

Next step is to check the opportunity if i can switch to some buttons with the correct labels.
Maybe i switch to my original G21 buttons or i look for some 8 series button in gloss black.

Unfortunately there´s another problem.
You can´t switch into manual shifting...
It only worked in standstill but while driving it directly switches back to D.

Final update!
It´s working...
I was able do flash the EGS7 to LCI SWFK and SWFL.
It shows some prerequisites for the DME but i just flashed the EGS7 and did the CAFD injection afterwards.
I can switch between P, R, N, D and S/M.
Switching between D and S works with the shifter.
Switching between S and M only with the paddles, as the LCI can´t manually switch gears with the new rocker.

Got everything put back together, flashed, coded and it´s working.

In short:
1. PreLCI needs to be flashed with EGS7 LCI software.
1.1 If you´re using xHP, you need a custom map from them!
2. For correct buttons, you need the gloss black drive mode cover from a 8 series gear selector.
2.1 The lightning behind some buttons wont fit the new cover, but you can remove parts of the PCB underneath it, just don´t get too close to the borders.
3. Sport and Eco Pro are swapped but this can the coded in the BDC_BODY3.

I also used the 8 series convertible switch and connected to to a garage door opener. I can use both direction to control my garage door.
Plus i got the lightning for the convertible switch from the USB-C port in the center console.

Just to be clear what´s not working:
1. The exhaust button reacts but has no functionality!
2. A MSA button wont work, as M cars don´t have this button and the gear shifter unit doesn´t react at all.
3. The Drivelogic rocker doesn´t work with the EGS7 LCI software
3.1 xHP can write a custom map with the Drivelogic rocker working!

So just to be clear, as plug and play the manual shifting will not work even in an lci vehicle? I know manual shifting works when you retro fit the pre lci shift knob onto the lci so I’m inclined to go that route.

Manual shifting only works with the steering wheel paddles, as the LCI can´t be manually shifted with the new rocker.
I´m pretty sure you can´t manually shift a LCI with the PreLCI unit without flashing the PreLCI EGS7 software.

Maybe the pre lci shifter sends a different command for manual shifting?
I only tested it in my pre lci but heard it works p&p in the lci, with the same limitation that you can´t shift with the gear selector and only the paddles.

My main interest is being able to use the manual shifting on the center console tbh. I have no idea why it wouldn’t work in pre lci, my only concern is that the 2025 got a new version of the zf8 and I’m worried that even pre lci won’t be compatible. You also can’t flash XHP, I might just habe to buy it and try it.

I can´t answer you that...
It doesn´t work with LCI software on the PreLCI or any of the custom software that xHP has send me in the last weeks.
We tried multiple combinations and non of them could shift with the gear selector.
Some only worked with D and you lost S and M completely.

Dang that’s unfortunate, luckily I have a lot of time for someone to try to figure out. Cars brand new and I have a longgg warrsnty ahead of me 🫠. I appreciate all your help and dedication to this project, PLEASE update if anything changes 🙏.

Hey, just wanted to see how you changed the buttons from an 8 series to the g80 style shifter. Also, can you explain how XHP can send you a custom map to make the shifter work and will allow you to shift with it. The issue I’m having with mine is, I can’t shift with it in manual, also since I don’t have a button for “setup” there is no sport button and because of this I have to use voice control to activate sport mode. I want to change the buttons and eventually get XHP for the manual shifting. I’m in an lci 2023 m340i btw. Thanks for the help!

I posted pictures of what my old shifter was like versus the new.

Your G8x M shifter doesn´t work and you need one from the G09 XM.
The LCI normally doesn´t need a xHP custom map.
The manual shifting only works with the paddles.

First - amazing job on everything you’ve done in regards to these retrofits! I’ve been following along, and you have definitely inspired my urge to get the “perfect” setup in my G20 LCI.

So, I have attached a bunch of photos which include a summarized snapshot of what I currently have. There is a picture of my current LCI console, and then pictures of 2 additional consoles & an Alpina iDrive module that I have acquired in hopes of creating my perfectly-functional dream console.

Just to note, my goal is to have a complete OEM Glass/Crafted Clarity console finish with all original buttons & modules functioning. I don’t care as much about the shifter itself, honestly- if it was easy enough to find a CC LCI console with all of the buttons I need, I would have gotten that. I thought I had one from overseas, but it happened to be a scam.

However, I do love the M touches, so I’m thinking that I’d use that one, and swap the drive mode buttons as you have. I’ve been worried about if I messed anything up by removing them with those flimsy ribbons… but looks like you were successful so that’s a plus.

Lastly- I’ve attached a photo of a rocker switch from an X5, used for suspension height. For this, do you think there is any way to code the rocker switch to control audio volume up/down? If not this particular module, any suggestions that may work otherwise? I’m not a smart & savvy coder… so this is where I get nervous and would need outside assstance.

Otherwise, when you have a moment, can you confirm that what I have and described above should be functional? Any opinions and/or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Apologies for the long post, I just can’t help myself sometimes. Thanks again for your contributions to this community.

Just don´t loose the little rubber balls, you need them!
I missed one and had to remove the cover again :-(

Nope, not possible, atleast not without wiring something totally DIY.
Theres no parameter to code the rocker to audio volumen.

Looks good.
1. You already got an LCI and don´t need coding for the XM gear selector.
2. The pictured M gear selector doesn´t work or you´ll loose the sport button. Only the XM gear selector with the setup button at first position works.
3. The Alpina iDrive controller should work, it´s a different unit and just plugs into the gear selector unit.
4. It looks like your LCI unit doesn´t have the MSA button. Using a unit with MSA button doesn´t enable this feature, it would be a dead button. The XM gear selector doesn´t have this button.

Fantastic mod and I'm willing to make mine something like that on my G05

I don't like to new shifting pattern of the M one (D on the right), so is it possibile to put the M lever to a standard console or it's impossible to disassemble?

You can´t just switch the lever itself for multiple reasons.
It doesn´t fit, the electronics are different and you´re missing the unlock button to put the transmission into gear.
It only works as a whole or not at all.

Quick update!
I received a new xHP custom map and i can now shift with the lever and the paddles.
But i can´t (easily) enter S mode.
I need to shift up with the lever and then hold the right paddle to...
Feels like a cheat code :-)

Currently tilting the lever to the right does nothing...
Maybe xHP can fix this last flaw and i got an almost fully functional M gear selector.

Got another map from xHP and we´re coming really close to the final result.

I can use D/S and M with paddles and the shifter itself.
But the transmission is unsure when to use D or S when shifting into it from P,R or N.
Sometimes D wins and somes S wins.

Just need a final polish to fix this and it´s working.
