BMW tool checklist

Hey guys I have been trying to compile a bunch of tools etc that any BMW owner would potentially need. Its not a complete list and I can add more as time goes on. Feel free to look it over and let me know if I missed anything!

Garage List

Nice List!!!

Maybe I overlooked them, but here's a couple items that are handy to have.

- An extendible mirror w/ a light source
- A boroscope
- A piped "tree" w/ gauges for for drawing vacuum & then filling coolant.
- I don't think you can have enough different sized (& drive) allen/torx/etorx sockets in your inventory. lol. I find that the extended length torx/allen sockets that I have get used quite frequently and are handy for squeezing thru tight spaces.
- 3/8" & 1/2" breaker bars (and a 1" dia. x 2'-0" piece of pipe always nice)
- Rubber Mallet

- Having a hand held scanner or bluetooth scanner app is sometimes much more convienent & quicker when doing simple tasks or monitoring readings vs the laptop + ISTA

Good list!

I would add a 36 mm socket for the oil filter housing.

Here are some nice to haves depending on what work you are doing:

-32mm socket for turning over the crankshaft. Make sure it's not too deep so you have enough room to get your ratchet in there

-1/2" and 3/8" impact swivel sockets or swivel adapters. These are good for doing suspension work with an impact gun

-Flexible nut drivers. Good for all the jubilee clamps. This is the set I have but I think I mostly use the 7mm (?) on the M3: ‎CTA Tools 1051 Flex Nut Driver Set (4 Pc.)

-Ear clamp pliers for replacing ear clamps on various hoses

It goes without saying, but you'll need a good jack and jackstands

I don’t see a torque wrench listed. Most start with a 1/2 drive up to 150 or 250 lbs for wheels. But as you do more work, you may need one that is accurate at 5 lbs or 300 lbs, which means you need a few. And later model BMWs often specify angle torque so you need an angle adapter or a more expensive electronic wrench that does angles.

A battery impact wrench is nice to have, but again there are a lot of choices — light and compact for tight spaces and ease of use versus big and heavy and powerful.

Hex, torx, etorx are also all used on BMWs depending on the year.

I have been collecting tools as a DIYer for over 30 years and am not done yet.
