Saw local dealer offering 2020 M340i at $519 monthly with $5000 down payment (30k mi for 36 months), plus DMV fee and tax. Seems significantly lower than any other cars with MSRP around 58k. Does it sound like a good deal?

Down payment on a lease is a no-no. Ask what the % off MSRP is and then get the buy rate money factor.

The sum is, you're negotiating 2 SEPARATE things: (1.) the cost of the car including incentives, etc, and (2.) the cost of the financing, is this case a lease - you'll need to consider getting the base money factor rate, eliminating all garbage fees, etc. The great benefit of a lease is that you're negotiating the "sale" of the car at the end of lease up front so no matter what happens in the market, BMWFS still has to "pay" you for the pre-negotiated price. For example, my lease is up in Nov - let's say COVID19 craters the used car market thus making a $60k car now worth $30k then. If I'd gotten a loan, I'd be fucked; with a lease I get the option: get my $60K and walk or negotiate a much better market-normalized purchase price. This would also be the case if I'd crashed the car 10 times - BMWFS still has to take it back for my pre-negotiated price with a lease.

I don't really think there is a discussion or argument here from any of us M owners. We have an M for a reason. If you are a true BMW fan, you respect an M for what it is. A timeless machine that to me dates and ages better than any manufactured car except the 911.
I appreciate the new 3, but in general I just don't really notice or care about a 3 series on the road. I do notice all generations of M's on the road, because of the history and the culture that goes along with it. |

I don't understand why people are so gleeful about a new generation car vs outgoing gen - regardless if it's a M or base... You're comparing the G to the F series, wtf do you think is going to happen? That BMW was going to make the next gen cars slower?!
And wtf do you think will happen when the G8X comes out? It's going to be slower than G20? This happens to ALL car manufacturers... 488 is quicker than 458 for example, as it should, considering it's a NEW GENERATION... Me personally I enjoy how each iteration gets better and quicker and so on and so forth... I wouldn't shit on F8X or G20 or anything of the sort - G20 gives us a glimpse into what numbers the G8X will do and to me that's more exciting to me than "oh boy!! The G20 is gonna piss off a lot of new M3/M4 owners!!" Yeah, no... I can't imagine there's going to be a long list of G8X owners who are gonna sit there and say - "gee, I should've got a M340..." And to clarify again for the idiots - no, I don't think the M340 is crap - will say it again, but the better the M340 performs? The more excited you should be for the ensuing M models... Minus the grill... I just can't... For my personal tastes that is... |

New generations of 3'ers always approach the straight line performance of previous generation M cars. That's not new and not a surprise. I doubt many F8X owners really care, and if they do I'm sure they can all afford to pick up a G20 if they want to.

If you are going to the track, get the M. If you are dropping the kids at school and then continuing on to the office, get the M340. |

Each new model is just Porsche number next. The 993 is going down in history as "THE" classic Porsche to own. And it is SLOW by comparison. |
