For me its all about contrast....black wheels on a light colored cars can pull it off the best.
I would say it is becoming increasingly "played out" but the worst culprit is matte black since it has that dull finish which appears cheap (i.e. plastadip). I always advise customers to do a semi-gloss so they at least retain some depth. I'm out on the "murdered-out" ....way too played out....and I feel I can say this because my 07 335i was -Scott OT, here is my latest experiment, it's a satin dark bronze. However, I had to torture the picture in Instagram to get the color to show through.

A lot depends on design, size of the wheel and colour of the car.
A lot of hot hatches come with not just blacks, but reds, purples etc. A bit like women, some have to watch what they wear, others look hot in anything. How many people turn their nose up at a Ferrari with black wheels and yellow calipers? Colour is very subjective at best of times. Let's face it, some people don't like EBII !! |

This is the only way I think black wheels look good. High gloss and extremely clean. It's just like a black car, you have to keep them clean or they just look disgusting. Flat black wheels for the most part just look like they have brake dust permanently caked on

black wheels are for BBK only (or at least M sport brakes or the like)
if you guys talk about played out....I saw a rav4 at the Toyota dealer and that came with a CF look interior trim (OEM), Now that's played out

I have had chrome wheels, polished wheels and black wheels on cars I've owned, Depends on the car.

A clean, gloss black 19"+ wheel over a bright BBK and on a brightly colored (or silver) car I can get on board with. Anything else just looks cheap to me.

Totally agree OP! I always wonder why people spend ridiculous amts of money on black rims that are so hard to see it may as well be some cheap no-name brand rims. That, and the fact that they all look like they are cars with missing hubcaps or something.
The dark grays, gunmetal grays, anthracites, hyper blacks, black rims w/ diamond cut or other accents that allows you to see some parts of the rim, etc. I am totally fine with. But the totally black rims... especially the satin or matte finish black rims that look like total black voids leaves me scratching my head. |

I think the black rim is also kind of a generational. I was born in the 90s. By the time I was able to drive the black rim thing was totally in. My parents are not big fans of the black rim. It's the same thing when I see old guys picking the chrome rim option on their corvette. Because in the 50s chrome was in.
I think when the black rim is done with good paint in a good looking rim it works. But some 16 year old plastic dips there honda that looks bad. |

I've been running black wheels since I got into cars about a decade ago. I think aesthetically it gives the car a meaner look and makes your car stand out from the sea of stock cars.
On a black car, I still prefer gunmetal for some contrast. White is also iffy, black gives it a bit of a Stormtrooper look at times. On a side note, I hate chrome and avoid it at all costs lol.

I genuinely loathe black wheels. There is no point to them whatsoever from an aesthetic POV. The whole idea of having nice looking wheel is.. well.. TO BE ABLE TO SEE IT. Black wheels totally hide the spoke designs and it just looks like a gaping dark chunk on the side of a car. Horrid.
