With the s58 being a revision and not a new engine, I hope they do something about exhaust note!

The G20 3 Series upon which it will be based has already been in testing for two years (since January 2016)

Here is a roundup of the early info / rumors:
-- may make debut at 2019 Frankfurt motor show
-- launch to market early 2020
-- built on modular CLAR platform, which also underpins the M5, M760iX and their regular series models
-- features more aluminum and high-strength steel construction
-- powered by S58 engine (which will first debut in the X3M). Expected to produce 450-460hp in X3M, but may make more in G80 M3.
-- may feature water injection system from GTS
-- choice of 6 speed manual or 8 speed automatic
-- may be optional AWD M xDrive (as used on the F90 M5)
-- carbon fiber roof

The prototype shows the telltale signs of BMW M3 models -- wider track and fenders front and rear, quad exhaust tips, trunk spoiler lip, and more aggressive bodywork.

This prototype has a moonroof, although carbon fiber roof is expected to return. And it has standard mirrors, which will be replaced with M specific mirrors at a later stage.

If 911 can have an optional AWD then I think M3 should have one too.
Yeah but GT3/GT2's don't have AWD. So neither should M3/M4.

Yeah but why have all the extra weight of awd? Can't switch that on and off...

I think he's hinting at the overall lack of new innovation or direction, at least based on what we know currently. Lots of recycled or slightly modified parts...so, there isn't as much to do for the G series M3/4.

I guess it kills two birds with one stone? On one hand, everyday drivers can leave it in AWD or AWD Sport and have fun, or use it for bad weather conditions. Then there is people like you and me who actually drive M3s and love the RWD characteristics. I drive in MDM to still get the car to lose its grip in the back at certain times while making sure it'll save me before I die. These new AWD with switacblilty to RWD are either all or nothing.

I think it is three years out and we don't know much yet. To imply it's a parts bin car at this stage from the comfort of ones keyboard is just shortsighted. The irony of his statement is that he seems a "m" purist; which is someone who should understand that a car is more than a sum of its parts.

E92/3 M3: 2008 - 2013 (MY2008 - MY2013)

F80 M3: 2014 - 2018 (MY2015 - MY2018)
F82/3 M4: 2014 - 2020 (MY2015 - MY2020)

So, the reality is the F8x M3/M4 will actually be in production roughly a year longer than their E9x M3 counterparts.

FAQ:

Q: Why do the two-door M models go longer?
A: Because the Series two-door models they are based on go later.

Q: Ok, but why do the Series two-door models go later?
A: Because they debut later.

Q: Alright, but why do they debut later?
A: Because auto manufacturers stagger product releases to minimize risk and spread costs.

Q: Fine. But then why doesn't the M3 sedan start commensurately sooner?
A: Because of the familial shared parts that are plucked from the late-arriving Series two-door.

Q: Wow, that’s a bummer for sedan buyers. Will they ever rectify this?
A: Only if M3 revenue were to become large enough to warrant separation from the M4.
The E9X M3 actually started production in 2007, so both the E9X and F8X ///M will have had the same lifespan

Hilarious hearing many of you poo poo'ing AWD but wouldn't drive the car in RWD with traction control off. An M xDrive option completely makes sense when you're trying to move incredible amounts of torque through rear tires not up to the task. Also, it wouldn't be run of the mill AWD. Read up on the new M5. And FFS what's wrong with making it an OPTION? If they make a RWD and an M xDrive version, it's practically guaranteed that the AWD will be able to slaughter the RWD in all measures.

Will be waiting for the 2022MY with LCI and CompPack.
Just in case its a turd - i just did PCD pickup on my 2018 M3 CP, so will try to hang on to it for few years lol.

If the new M3 comes out in 2020, how are they going to market it along with older F82 M4 that will still be in production? Seems strange and completely different than what BMW has done historically.

Well if they increase base price by $10k like they did with new M5 and the horrible lease deals continue then it will be harder for majority ppl to get one.
M3s have never been rare cars, i still see a bunch of e46 m3 on regular basis.

What is this feature we may not like???

What i want to see is BMW copy Porsche and offer a GT3 type variant with a bespoke Naturally Aspirated V8 or Inline 6, focused strictly on the enthusiast - lower weight, coilover suspension, bucket seats, etc.
