They will cut weight with new technology and as mentioned added composite material. If new gen will have an all wheel drive system similar to the m5 than yes weight reduction will be a lot less but I’m sure they will manage to keep it similar to the current F80 gen if not lighter. Models like the cs, gts, etc.. they will improve the chassis and slightly increase power and again add lighter materials like a CF hood. Last edited by 4DRS55; 01-10-2019 at 10:40 PM.. |

edited my original response... After I confirmed I had the CF driveshaft on my 18 and read others after November production had CF driveshaft, didn’t follow up on the thread. Last edited by 4DRS55; 01-10-2019 at 10:41 PM.. |

Like the carbon fiber roof on the E9X or the quad exhaust on the e46 M3. |

I think the G20 is 121lbs lighter than the F30:
https://jalopnik.com/the-bmw-m340i-d...-ma-1830405871 The F90 M5 is 45lbs lighter than the F10 M5 even with AWD. https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...6/2018-bmw-m5/ The 992 is heavier mostly because the entire car has been engineered to accept a hybrid powertrain. Most likely, if a similar fate were to befall the G80, we'd have seen some weight gain in the base G20. I don't think we'll see the same 121lbs savings that the G20 got, since the F80 already has some of the aluminum parts that enabled the G20 to get that low. But I also don't expect a huge weight gain over the current car.

(I hope). Speaking of price, I think the CS price point moves the BMW far too close in cost to the 911 but unfortunately the only comparisons I'm aware of (with the Porsche) are with the GTS, a far more expensive entry...I'm rambling.... |

Exactly. Anyone who has the means for a 911 and doesn't require practicality buys a 911. The M3/M4 is a great car, but a compromise.

The key for me is that the M5 managed to be half a foot longer, AWD, and Torque converter ZF8 and has the same weight as an e60. That's impressive even if we are talking 4K lbs. the M6 GTE weighs 2800 lbs, so you can see the price of luxury is weight. BMWs current market for M cars is actually the luxury market.m, the sports car aspect is just marketing flavor at this point. And such I predict the M3 pure will weigh 3550 lbs and the M3 base will clock in at 3800 lbs with AWD and that fat transmission. Impressive though as it's the same size as the e60! BMW doesn't compete with Porsche anymore. M2 is close but underpowered, and M4 is very big to be considered a 911 competitor. |

As long as they increase wheel base, add more tech, larger diameter wheels, etc. the trend will continue and future models will be heavier.

If the M340i weight is any indication, it's not boding well for the new M3. https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1599263

It means I will jump the ship if they make the car as boring as F90.
Might as well get an actual sports car than a heavy ass rebadged Quattro sedan. S58 Engine doesn't sound remotely sharp compared even to an S55. I'm sure lower compression (9.3 vs 10.2) for more more more boost doesn't help. Plain speed is just boring.
