Toyota puts the B58B30O1 in the 2021 Supra (Same as BMW M*40i - 382hp / 369lb-ft)
As a BMW owner and enthusiast, I'm disappointed that they're putting the high output B38B30O1 into the 2021 Supra. I thought using the lower output B38B30M1 engine (which was in the 2020 Supra) was the proper thing to do.
With the same engine as the M340i, Toyota lists the Supra 0-60 time at 3.9s which is obviously faster than the M340i. https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-...r-turbo-model/ What are your thoughts on this? |

I guess I get what you're saying but it weighs ~500lb less than a M340i, what do you expect to happen to the 0-60 time?
The Supra is a special car and we all know its DNA despite the badge.

Yes, the car is lighter. We all know that. My point was about the engine. The 2020 Supra had a 335hp B58 engine. The 2021 will now use the same 382hp engine that's in the M340i.

So what? The more choices we get, as consumers, the better. My personal view is that it is not my job in life to support BMW...they are not my employer. So long as they make a car that meets my needs better than anyone else, I will continue to buy BMW; if someone else makes one better for me, I will buy that one.
I applaud BMW for providing the engine to Toyota. BTW...Mercedes does the same thing with AMG. AMG engines are in Aston Martins and they are NOT detuned. |

Right, you said they're going to spec. 3.9s 0-60. What do you expect to happen with a more powerful engine in a lighter car? I'm guessing the engine is exactly the same as before it just has the same tune as the M340i now. Of course I'd like my M340i to accelerate faster than it but I get why it won't. Despite the T badge, I try to think of it as one of the family. The current Supra is already putting down some impressive numbers which openly reflects well on BMW and if that gets better it will only cast BMW in an even better light.

I don't really consider Toyota a competitor.
And more specifically, the Supra is a hardcore sports car. The M340i is a luxury sports sedan. Even the Supra's closer relative, the Z4, is a luxury convertible sports coupe. There's no cross shopping happening here. So it doesn't really bother me.

I think it's great the Supra is now given the hotter B58 motor. I get they're similar money, but the two aren't cross-shopped much... one is a RWD two-seat sports coupe while the other is a 4-door sport sedan with optional AWD.

Seems most of us are happy this car gets to fight well for BMW even with a T badge.

I don't know, maybe I'm just old school. I prefer brand competition. If Toyota wants to build a sports car, they should design an engine that's worthy of a sports car and put their name on it. Competition drives innovation.

You missed my point. I'm happy you posted this, it's interesting. However you made it seem like adding the updated B58 engine to the Supra was somehow a slight to the M340i. I just don't understand your take on this, and why it would mean anything to M340i owners or perspective owners. Why would I be upset by this?

I get it but the automotive world and that of car enthusiasts is much better served that a Supra replacement exists (it wouldn't without this Toyota/BMW partnership) and that it's a serious sports car, not a watered down appliance wearing the Supra name.

Some car companies buy a proven power plant that is well suited to their purpose. It is cheaper the developing their own. There are other examples too , I just can't think of any more right now off the top of my head. Same power and lighter equals faster, albeit only a tic or two. As we know people have been getting 4.0 - 4.2 on stock m340's

I saw a video where they did a dyno test on the 2020 Supra and it made 395hp at the crank. They said it makes 335hp and it was dynod at 339whp. Technically Toyota didn’t lie
The supra is faster than the M340i and even the Z4 M40i. The interior is all BMW bits too, right down to the I drive software. I also kinda like the looks of the supra better than the Z4. Plus the supra nametag. Between the Z4 and supra, it’s the supra for me. And they’re also bringing the B48 engine found in the 330i and Z4 30i. Though a 2.0L engine in the supra is blasphemous.

One car is a 4 door door sports sedan and the other is sports car. Same engines. They are not crossed shopped. I find it amazing people are worried about a few 10's of second here and there. Really? Besides someone who may track a car who drag races their 3 series.

I guess I just see them as cars aimed at different markets. I wouldn't compare a Supra to a G20 any more than I would compare the G20 to an SUV (regardless of manufacturer).
