Agreed, the 7 and X7 reference was with regard to wishing people would stop the constant beating on large grills.

They aren't. Yet people still bitch about it. Clearly it's a matter of opinion so we shouldn't be at each others throats about it.

The thing is, a large grill, or large grilles, can look great on a car. Take the new Jag F-type, for example. See below. Gorgeous.
The issue with the BMW design in question is not the unsightly grille, per se - it's the whole front end which doesn't work, period. A poor design overall, imo.

I think the difference between BMW and all other manufacturers is that BMW's use of a grille is also a brand identifier - almost like a logo where as every other brand, a grille is just a grille. Even if you were to take the kidney grille design you thought was best, while not terrible, BMWs front ends are never really cohesive vs "generic grilles".

That's a fair point.
So when you mess with a core brand design identifier, you do so at your peril.
As I posted earlier, I parked near a 7 series LCI the other day, and the front end looked plain ridiculous to my eyes, for want of a better expression.

I think one of the most interesting things about the grills is in profile they have a pronounced curvature, raked at the top and curved downward from the upper middle area to the bottom, definite shark nose look. That will definitely affect the perspective in person, in a way that is difficult to capture in photographs

I want to see it in person, but honestly I dont mind it.

I havent seen the new grill on the 7 in person yet, my 7 was the last of the old grill and its fine.

I have seen and driven the new X7 a bunch with the new grill and on that SUV it works really well.

What I guess I dont understand is the 850 looks fantastic, did they not want to make it look too close to that?

I generally like the more aggressive larger grills. The new X5 looks spectacular. The X7 is slightly too large but I like how it looks different than X5 as it is a larger SUV.

The 7 series though looks awful. There is one where I live, and I see it every day. I can't get used to it. It just looks cheap. Almost looks like it was released at the design/prototype stage. I have been seeing it for the last 2 months every day, and I still don't like it.

I actually prefer the 4 series new grill better lol. As long as there is no license plate in the front, 4 looks kind of cool. It is growing on me

Every state requires at least a rear license plate, but as previously mentioned, there are 19 states that do not require a front plate. These states are:

Alabama
Arizona
Arkansas
Delaware
Florida
Georgia
Indiana
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisiana
Michigan
Mississippi
New Mexico
North Carolina
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Tennessee
West Virginia.... "[/COLOR]
So more than half the country in one of BMW's biggest markets requires a front plate.. any idea how many European countries? Seems like these designs that don't account for it are alienating the majority.

I prefer the previous F-Type. It looks far more like a sports car and has a sportier aesthetic than the new model. Which looks like a sedan for the purpose of being uniform with the rest of the brand.
You won't get this with THE 4.

More's the pity they haven't adopted Jag's approach.
If BMW had a sensibly sized grille/grilles which were proportionate, discrete and uniform across models, we probably wouldn't be in this disappointing design phase.
I've had five BMWs in a row but will be holding back from any new purchase until they've rediscovered their design prowess - which hopefully will only be one series away?

Plenty of enthusiasts ignore the law sure, but the vast majority of the population use a plate where it's required.
