I don't understand why BMW puts coding for stuff like this but doesn't actually enable them. For example like why do US 330s not have sport plus enabled stock? And, why is this engine noise feature not enabled in the first place?

I tried in Sport and couldn't hear any difference. The reason I asked about coding in another module is that generally the head unit is about "user interface" kind of stuff with another module doing the execution-- just my thoughts??

Emissions bro, emissions.. the biggest culprit to power and sound. But the engine sound mode is probably a feature that would be available in other models just not meant for 330i.

The simple answer is worldwide sales. BMW puts a number of Electronic Control Modules on their cars. They then use the same ECUs in different countries, models & option levels and enable (or not) different functions-- some of which have to be used in conjunction with additional hardware. Two simple examples on my retired F30: * I found & coded a good awful inside the car back up sound (which I subsequently un-coded) that is mandated in Japan * I found alarm functions that I coded but never worked because my car didn't have alarm option. The way I understand coding, which is not programming, is that coding enables functions by using different data sets -- so what we do in coding is to find data sets that enable functions in our cars that aren't currently working-- given the hardware to make them work is present Hope that helps!

Sporty - Valve Fully Open Balanced - Valve Opening Varies Reduced - Valve Fully Closed This basically sums it up. When you're in Sport+, your valves are fully open already anyway. This is so that you can keep the valves fully open and run comfort for a more aggressive sound, or go Sport+ and keep the valves fully closed so you have less engine noise with same amount of pops and bangs. If you have stock exhaust, this will have minimal to no effect on the sound of your car. If you have exhaust mods, this will help you configure the sound of your car through a stock iDrive feature, effectively helping you change the sound of the exhaust to suit certain situations, like if you're in city and want a more subtle exhaust sound, or if you are on open roads and really want to hear the full sound of your car. Whatever the application, with any exhaust mods, this feature will only be able to help you enjoy the exhaust of your car more. |

the only problem that I have found is that you need to select the engine noise every time you restart the car, otherwise it would go back to default.

OK - help please.
2019 320i M Sport - The car only has ECO, Comfort and Sport driving modes. I have seen the thread on programming Sport+ and this one for Engine sounds. I am not too interested in the higher revs on Sport Plus I am looking to achieve a more sporty engine and cabin sound when in Sport mode, or Sport + if I do enable this. Does Sport + change the engine sound? Does coding as described in this thread provide a difference to the exhaust sound? Is there an ASD speaker on this which BeemerCode enables me to turn on under the RAM header - can the cabin noise be increased and does this tie in with driving mode selected? Thanks every and anyone that can help here. Just seems pointless upgrading the app and coding a car on a lease if I cant get what i want by doing it. |

I guess I just missed that margin and I’m lucky. Mine has the 07/2019 software and I have pops and burbles and bearable gunshots at around 4-5k rpms.

I had got the impression that this new didnt have the options anymore but I cant tell if coded in they still exist/would work or not which is what cant find anywhere out there. I have been told the asd module is in the boot (trunk for you US guys) but dont know what looking for or where exactly to search to determine the in cabin capability. But probably even more interested if the valve open and engine sound. Last edited by jw390898; 04-13-2020 at 09:48 PM.. Reason: Add image |

OK so connected to the car today in Bimmercode and have couple questions.
If activating the engine sound obviously one menu speaks for itself and you enable but on the other do you want aktiv or aktiv_no_sport? Then also noticed elsewhere sportplus attenuation settings. |

Choose aktiv to enable, not sure what aktiv_no_sport means, you could try it to find out I guess. |

So enable both the Display Engine Sound and Configurability basically?
Any idea what the other screenshot with the attenuation is about - wondering if this has relevance to sound output too? Thanks |

I coded this to my EU 2019 320i. It appeared on the Settings menu as well but I can't click on the 'Depending on driving mode, Sport, Balanced, Reduced' options. It is not grayed out. But when I try to select one of them, nothing happens, does not turn in to a red dot. Hardware issue?

I coded last night, added in Sport+ and Comfort+ as driving modes and enabled the engine sound along with memory for Auto Stop Start and Video in Motion and turned on Active Sound. I can select fine in the menu, idling cannot hear the slightest difference, may get to go out today to tell if it makes a difference on the move as seen someone say idle it doesnt. I would suggest perhaps turning them off and then recoding them back in again see if it makes a difference - or if you want to wait and I'll report back if it is even worth the effort based on whether I hear any difference....... |

Well I would not bother with post July 2019 engine sound modifying.
IF there is any difference then it is the tiniest growl in Sport+ mode - Recommend Sport+ it sits the revs just under 3000rpm and torque is hugely improved with no lag - havent checked mpg on using it ASD being enabled makes sweet FA difference too. |
