M340i exhaust - louder in comfort

Hi all,

I’m a good few weeks into owning my M340i now. I must be past the run-in period although I didn’t run it in as rigorously as I did with my previous 335d.

Around 1100 miles now.

I’ve noticed that the exhaust is now noticeably louder/meatier in comfort mode than it was before. Is this expected? I’m happy with the sound obviously! but just wondered :-)

Thanks!

Hey you're not around anybody if you are in your car driving. More or less it's a sealed compartment with air conditioning. Then again I don't know the guidelines in your state.

My 2019 330i Xdrive has gotten decently louder in sport and comfort after the first few thousand miles. I'm not sure why but I noticed a difference and was surprised how much better it sounded as I put more miles on it after getting it with only 4 miles

That's not the point though. People making unnecessary journeys, be that to go for a drive in the car or even driving to remote spots in the countryside to exercise, increases the chances of accidents, and that would be a waste of resources for the health service at a time when they're already stretched. If a Lancashire State Trooper stopped Mattyk whilst he was out driving, I'm not sure "I'm running it in" would be a sufficient excuse to give the feds.

Seems like an extreme stretch and a lot of what-ifs for a flu with a less than one percent mortality rate. But ok.

Either you've either been living under a rock for the last month or you have no understanding of the issues COVID-19 presents.

The mortality rate is much higher than 1% for a start, and there is no vaccine. And because the incubation period is up to 14 days combined with it being more contagious than regular flu, it has the potential to severely overwhelm hospitals. The ExCel exhibition centre in London has been converted into a temporary hospital, for example, as have other sites in the UK.

If I crash / breakdown etc it brings numerous others into play, exposing them to risk.

You will get a fine for an unnecessary journey in the uk

I'm well aware, I work in a hospital every day. And I'm stateside so I'm sure things are a bit different. Agree to disagree.

Back on topic!!

I noticed my M340i exhaust note changing around the 900mile mark. I actually noticed the change in eco pro during moderate acceleration. Will see what it’s like when I’m home and the lockdown ends!

I have no real life experience to add here 'cos I picked mine up with 5,000 miles on the clock, but... rumour has it that pipes do get louder over time as the sound deadening materials start to get 'clogged up' and become less efficient.

Although, I wouldn't easily swallow this explanation after only 1,100 miles.

Is it just in Comfort mode, or across the board?

The exhaust will get slightly louder yes. Same was true of my 340i. Also best to unplug the flap on the left once in sport mode so it stays open for a bit more burble.

Interesting - I wouldn’t buy that explanation either given the low mileage I’ve done.

To be fair I’ve not actually tested eco pro mode because I never drive in it but I’ll see if it’s louder in that too.

Thanks - when you say unplug the flap - is this permanently unplugged in all modes or just for sport? I assume all modes. How much louder is it? And have you got a link to a guide?

Cheers!

There are a few posts about this, but this is the one I followed - https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1676653

The steps I took were:

1) Find the wire to the flap control and unplug it, then push it back in enough to make the electrical connection without the plastic cover 'locking'. I say this because it is fiddly to disconnect the wire - you'll need a small screwdriver to prise open the lug to slide off - and the key to this is disconnecting when the flap is open. That window is not as large as you think ;-)

2) From cold, start the engine in Sports Mode.

3) Look into the right hand pipe to make sure the valve is open and remove the wire.

4) A bit of electrical tape to keep the connections clean and a zip tie or two to keep the wire from dragging on the floor.

Took me a lot less than I thought and is completely reversible.
