[CarWow]: BMW M340i Touring vs Audi RS4 Avant Race

BIMMERPOST

WOW! That M340i holds its own! I also agree that BMW seems to tune the transmission better. Audi seems to tune their transmissions with a delay for fuel consumption purposes. My S5 lease is over very soon and I don't know if I'm jumping into another one.

Transmission tuning was the exact reason I jumped ship from Audi. Once you get it going it's fun but creeping at low speeds or off the line is terrible with the throttle delay. RS3 has it (along with turbo lag) and so does the RS5. Saps the fun out of the performance.

Impressive showing of the M340i. That B58 sure has some grunt.

I just watched that same video. I wasn't expecting it to beat the RS4 but the fact that it kept up pretty well says a lot about the M340i's power.

Niceeeeee!

I bought a new m340 Touring a month ago - returned it (didn't have all the options I was after) - ordered a Metallic grey one for August/September. Driving a 320D for now - can't wait to get that sweeet i6 back again.

I wouldn't care if the Audi lost 0-3, I'd still take it over the BMW...... it's 10x sexier!

Impressive. It seems an M4 in touring version would clearly beat the RS4 Avant. I also think the Audi is better looking.

It would have been an even better test, if it included one of these...

FINALLY! A proper comparison that actually matches purpose built machines. I've been very critical of the past videos posted showing M340i drag race proper M cars, and they are all a waste. M cars are not geared or refined for drag races (M240i vs M2 and M340i vs F8X are proof of this) nor are current M cars AWD. THIS VIDEO, however is a proper match up. Heavy AWD Touring cars (wagons in this case) in a straight line. BMW has proven how impressive the M340i is as a touring car/wagon even against a more powerful and more expensive full on RS car.

A few points though:

1) How much time passed between each drag? I would guess that the RS, being more performance oriented, might have more cooling, which means the M340i might have lost the last 2 due to heat soak, which is also something the M cars have over the touring M340i.

2) What tires did each have?

3) RS brakes probably more performance oriented, or again, could still be hot from previous runs etc.

4) I still get bored with drag races, but at least this is a valid comparison, again kudos to the M340i!

I hate you BMW, why can't you bring the wagon over to the us. I love my sedan but come on. The wagon is the ultimate sleeper sports car.

I think problem is with Joe Achilles, not Audi, historically I've seen him lose every drag race regardless any vehicle he sits in. He fails to have a proper launch control every time.
