2021 M340i vs 2020 M340i Exhaust Comparison Shows 2021 Sounds Different

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
This Video Confirms the 2021 Exhaust note is different. Side by side comparison. This is very disappointing since I had to order a 21 model since the 2020's at dealers around here were terribly optioned.

What a great comparison video - thank you!!

ps- to reiterate, for anyone that is curious, MPE (which is just a muffler) or a piggyback is not going to fix the situation but a tune will (when the '21 cars DME gets cracked). I know not the answer some want to hear but presently that's where we are at

Some comments are saying that pops will begin to be heard after the car is broken in... is this verified?

Damn, that really is a significant difference - and *not* in a good way.

Wow that is a crazy difference. I doubt I would have purchased the 2021. One of the big reasons I liked the 2020 was the exhaust (was even better when I add the M Performance Exhaust). Just sounds so...ordinary now

The 2021's sound is more in line with the F3X 340 and 440. A bit disappointing to say the least especially when the 2020 had a much louder system. BMW teased and then took it away.

My car is a March 2019 build I swear I have more pops and bangs than other future builds on the M340. One article said it was because I have the original tune....then they detuned. No real proof but I get crazy pops with stock exhaust.

I don't even see how that's possible?

I'm sure it's as easy as a line of code to restrict the pops and burbles until the car hits a certain mileage - if that's what the intent was.

I just don't know if that's what's happening or if owners of the 2021 models are just stuck with a quieter exhaust.

I would be willing to trade my '20 for a '21 ... not a big fan of loud exhausts.

I'm sure this is why the change was made. Some people want that sound most do not. At least give us the options BMW!

Same here. The exhaust sound and note with those pops and burbles on my 2020 is what I absolutely love. I put on the MPE and damn, it's insane!! It even has the odd small pop when I'm in comfort mode with the exhaust.
Thanks for the comparison! Much appreciated.

This is how I feel as well. I absolutely would not drive a MY21 without the exhaust note after having my 2020 for about a year. Complete deal breaker and bmw needs to know this.

sorry, but forget that rumours. nothing is going to be better.
we had that allready in germany. bmw changed the sound design
in september/october 2019. people who got their cars before were lucky at the beginning.

...unless bmw changed those cars, too via update. and they did it without any info before.
for example... you went to a dealer for a service and that they did a update. forced by bmw.
peoole picked up their cars and the sound was gone.

long speech... sound is gone. will not come back after break in! that is the new trend!
regulations and restrictions comminh to you, initiated by the european union.

The big question is whether the sound difference is due to a software or hardware change.

Well, that's the good news.

Now we need someone to figure out how to get around the nanny-locks in place to adjust the applicable settings.

you can easily get the sound back if you go with MHD or bootmod... or you go to a tuner of your choise to bench unlock your dme and write new settings

I will throw in my 2cents having just test drove then followed through and ordered a 2021... both with MPE. The sound of the 2021 with MPE I found to be just about perfect to my taste for this class of vehicle. The last 3 years I have had a 440 with MPPSK and the pops at any liftoff at any point on the tach just became tiresome and annoying. I loved the louder sound but am happy they did away with the excessive popping especially at lower rpm/low load situations

I agree, my order is in too and I am okay with the toned down exhaust. I don't need extra attention anymore
Will update my profile soon
