Its pretty quick, zero tire spin. The electric motor negates the turbo lag as well. I think with bolt ons, a tune, and water meth in, it will be a contender.

Wait.....let me get that. One spends all that money on a BMW and one needs a tune, bolt on and water meth to make it a contender?

I finally saw one of these today at my local dealer. It was parked right up front as you enter the parking lot of the dealer. As soon as we saw it, my 12 year old son started to laugh uncontrollably. I thought maybe it would look better in the flesh, but nope, it was even worse.

Slowly beginning to accept the larger grilles but it's not something I really admire. Saw one at the local dealer and thought it was 'okay', wasn't inspired to rush out and buy one anytime soon.

I saw a couple of 4-series at a local dealer also. My reaction was that all this grill talk is much to do about nothing. The grill itself is not that huge. It's not like a Lexus. It's just shaped and oriented differently. Do I like it? I dunno. It's a grill. The overall car looks good including the grill. I actually think the back needs some more lines or something to make it more aggressive. But it looks good.

Looks aside, how does an M440 drive compared to the M340? Especially steering feel and handling? Is the difference noticeable or splitting hairs?

I’m 250 miles in my M440iX, so I’m still sorting out the car. It does drive much like the M340i, and Sport Plus is a lot of fun. Steering is okay in comfort, but definitely has more feedback in sport. I’ll add more after some more seat time and a little more spirited driving.

About the grille... I”ve actually measured the grill and from the outside edges of the surround, it is approximately 26.5 inches wide and 17.25 inches tall. So, including the surround, minus the dip in the center at the top and bottom of the center of the kidneys, the total area of the grille is approximately 450 square inches. The top edge of the grille at it’s highest point is only about 26.8 inches off the ground.

For comparison, if somebody is bored today... I would like to know that the dimensions/area of an M340 grill is, including the surround. I wonder is it’s really that much smaller, or is the angst over the 4 mostly about the different shape, which I suspect it is.

In my opinion that is not the problem with the Bugs Bunny grills. It is the height vs. the width. Horizontal grills make the car look aggressive; vertical grills make it look soft.

The previous BMW designer sums it up best in his thoughts. It's disproportionate to the rest of the car. A move so bold that it could backfire. I think it's repugnant to look at. In black you cannot notice it much though which is good. As in black on black.

The issue, at least to me, is the orientation, not the size. It is tall and fat and looks soft. Wide and narrow looks aggressive. So if BMW is looking to sell sports cars that look fat and soft, then the new grill fits the spot. so, at least for me, measuring is irrelevant; design is the issue.

In terms of driving the 4'ers suspension feels stiffer, the car does sit lower and is wider but it also feels like a larger car (which it is). Handling is similar and there is some feedback from the steering but it is generally quite numb just like the 3. Between the two cars I'd still take the M340.

This grill looked better in person if the brushed aluminum grey color. The black version looks good too. But the chrome version looks terrible

I find it interesting that people say the grill looks better or different in person. To me, it looks the same in pictures and in person. I mean, anything looks a little different in person. I find it hard to believe that someone hates something in a picture and then thinks it's the best thing in person. I guess you can have a bit more appreciation (or lack thereof) for something once you see it in person. Anyway, I think the grill looks fine. It didn't have the polarizing effect on me where I love it or hate it. It's not what I'm used to from BMW, but it's ok.

It's because 90% of the pictures of the grill online are taken from the perspective of a midget or small child / normal person's kneecap height.

in person review

I finally send one in person but it did not change my mind, when I first saw the e46 before it was in production, I knew I liked it.

Everyone has their own taste and if they like it, it is their preference. To be honest I am waiting on prior design to come out with their aftermarket bumper to decide whether to but a 4-series or an M4 but until then I wait.

Everything about the car I like except the front grill but that is just my opinion

I agree with one more quibble. They keep making the cars bigger. But, at least,BMW still makes a 2 series (the real 2 series) which is a splendid car.
