Battery tender/charger for 2021 M340i with 48 volt system
This 2021 M340i will be stored 4 months out of the year. I cannot seem to get an accurate answer from anyone at BMW as to which battery tender/charger will work properly with BMW's new 48 volt system. I have spoken with 4 different sources and they all simply direct me to BMW accessories and the two chargers they offer do not specify 48 volts. Thanks in advance for any information!

The car still has a 12v battery for car eletronics, the 48v battery is for the mild-hybrid system and I don't think you have a way of charging it directly

Spoke with Deltran who makes Battery Tender and they suggested their 4 volt unit. It is the same unit they built for BMW accessories. Hope this helps anyone else for their 2021 BMW. Chris

I have a mild hybrid engine and tried to trickle charge the battery with Ctek Mxs 5.0 without success, after a couple of hours the charger gets very hot and an error message about power management shows up on the central screen. Still figuring out if it's a problem of IBS sensor or just mild Hybrid engines needs different chargers...
covinsky I think you mean 4 amp, right? |

Do the mild hybrids even have an AGM battery?
I thought they had switched to Li-Ion. In that case you should only charge with a charger that can properly handle them. |

I am going in today
To speak with a BMW genius at a local dealership. I will see if we can find a service manager who can give us an answer to this question.

In my case the charge is not efficient and I gain more or less 5% in 8 hours. I tried both locked and unlocked and the result is the same. Also, you can try to leave the charger overnight and see if an error message about power management shows up in the morning. |

Still following this. Battery Tender went into shut down mode because battery was not fully charged in 24 hours. Who will be the first to figure out this mystery? Tried Battery tender while the BMW was unlocked and also while locked. No luck so far.

Encountered something like this with our G20 M340d xDrive which has this 48v system. Battery charging with the CTEK MXS 5.0 does work however the charger gets noticeably very very warm. It appears that the system doesn't go into a full "sleep state" whilst charging as the BlackVue dashcam battery I use strangely seemed to continue to receive charge well after it shouldn't whilst trickle charging, which doesn't happen when not on the charger. I also saw the "energy management" error appear every time after charging. I spoke to our BMW dealer who said they don't have any information to suggest that the normal trickle chargers shouldn't be used with these models so it is rather confusing. I also asked BMW UK for further assistance as I'm hoping they might be able to say why it occurs or what the specific advice is on charging models with this system.

I would like to know too, but I don't think most folks at dealers know. I tried a battery tender whilst unlocked and the car made a number of sounds like it was trying to do something but God knows what. After it did that for 15 minutes I pulled off the tender.
Any BMW employees on here that can give us a technically correct answer?
