US G2x models are getting engine updates in 2024

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Latest update from the Future BMW Model Information Thread

US G2x models are getting engine updates in 2024:
  • G22/G23 in March with LCI
  • G20/G21/G26 likely in July

G22/G23 LCI will bring the TÜ2 engines:
  • 430i gets B48B20O2 with power unchanged from the previous version at 255hp
  • M440i gets B58B30M2 at 375hp.
  • It is likely that this is a US + South Korea specific change, with other markets continuing with the existing TÜ1 engines. This is clearly an emissions driven change (SK uses US standards).

This also suggests that G20/G21/G26 could get the new engines starting with 07/24 production.

So loss of 12hp, going from 387 to 375 in US?

US has 382hp and 369 lb-ft of torque for the current O1 variant.

The M2 variant is 375hp and 384 lb-ft of torque (and 398 lb-ft with electrical assistance - ‘boost’)

Means a loss of 7hp, but a gain of 15 lb-ft (29 lb-ft with ‘boost’) of torque.

Didn't the 2023 G20 LCI get an updated powertrain? Like the 48V system was moved from belt to transmission? I thought that was the TU2 update

Technically it got that starting the 2021 MY for the M340i. I think with the TU2 the 48v MH is slightly improved, but could be wrong.

I'm probably totally wrong, but from my understanding, the 48V system was introduced in 2021 and has already improved with the 2023 LCI M340i which got an improved 48V MH which was moved from being a belt driven motor to being bolted on the transmission. And potentially with more torque. 195lbft (whereas the 2021 48V system never had an advertised torque figure)

So kinda a wash, assuming no O2 “high” TU2 pops out of nowhere and surprises everyone with actual increases. 0-60 might see a .1-.3 second difference from the increased torque (maybe).

Personally, I’d need to see the reliability of the TU2. Yeah it’s got port injection now in addition to direct, but that comes at a cost of increased complexity, and this dual system is new in BMW engine design. The B58 (the TU especially) is turning out to be one of the most reliable engines BMW has ever made. The TU2’s new injection system could change that.

Assuming no O2 and it indeed ends up being the M2, I’m just fine with my B58TUO1 with MH on my 23. Everyone is chomping at the bit for port injection, but that is really only noticeable if you plan on modding it extensively. For us regular folks, the difference is pretty minimal.

If somebody could confirm this that would be great, I honestly have no idea if this is true or not.

Engine refresh is mainly emissions and economy related rather than power.

They can’t really up the power anymore otherwise it’s getting dangerously close to the S58 engine outputs

Good point. I do wonder what the EPA rating of a TU2M2 engine based M340i would be.. A quick look at the 7 series RWD at 31MPG suggests it could be a few points higher than the current TUO1’s, given the 7 series is like 1000lbs heavier than the M340i. Maybe between 34-36MPG? That would be a nice bump for sure.

So basically it's getting the new X5 engine... net net, its about the same but I am sure with emission updates, this engine will be neutered in some way - sound, feel or whatever.

G29 Z4 did it receive this in the LCI? Didn’t see it mentioned here but it’s a G2X

I haven't seen any info on this, but I'm hoping that this engine refresh will include the 330e. Seeing the range and power improvement going from Gen 4.0 to Gen 5.0 like on the X5 xDrive50e would be cool to see on that car, would definitely tempt me to trade in my 2023 to get that. Just needs a little bit more power IMO. Overall though, these updates seem alright as long as the reliability is similar to the current lineup.

Glad to see TU2 confirmed as the 'engine update' for this upcoming year, especially with port injection. I think reliability ought to increase, but we'll see.

Not this year, next year. 2024 calendar year production run = 2025 MY in this case.

Isn't this the new B58 variant they announced for the 5 and 7 series to replace the current B58 variant of those models?

The M2 makes 453 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque.

Think this post refers to the m2 variant of the b58, not the m2 car with s58

The 11hp mild hybrid gives 195lb ft of torque?
