Today I pulled into my garage, shut off my car, started to open the door as I pulled my phone from the center counsel and started to get out the car started. Screen was black. I shut it off and it said "remote start". I checked my phone and the app was not open. I checked the app and nothing in the history. Did I do something that I missed? Has anyone else had this happen?

When you say it has done this twice, were you in the car, or did it just start on its own? Wondering because I don't need this car starting and running in my garage without me knowing about it. Remote start was an add-on feature I did not really need especially if it does this.

Never had this issue. I have two cars capable of this.

That said, if you have a concern, you can turn off the capability in iDrive.

Somehow it seems like you activated the pre-condition setting. When I park, the car asks me if I want to set a pre-conditioning time for the car to be ready when I return.

You can turn off the pre-condition settings, or you can just completely turn off the remote start feature.

This! You're reaching for something in the console and hitting the big dial, which is activating the pre-conditioning/ventilation system that turns the engine on. That system prompt can be turned off.

I turned off the car with the red button, started to get out and it started again. I wasn't sure if I did something funny with the brake pedal. The preconditions screen does come on sometimes but I don't remember hitting the iDrive button . Could have? Will have to pay closer attention.

Found another guy on the forum with a 2021 x5 I believe who said his started inside his garage by itself. See below

My '21 X5 40i started by itself this morning in a closed garage. I was outside walking the dog when I heard a loud rumble coming from inside the house/garage. I was not happy when I opened the garage door to find the X5 running. I did not have any scheduled starts set up via dash controls or the remote app. I was able to stop it using the BMW Connected app.

Now that you mention this one. This happened to me, one time, at a restaurant. I just took my foot off the gas, and the car started, again.

I think BMW makes it too easy to remote start the car. triple click the door lock button, doesn't seem to be the correct way. Either a dedicated button, or holding down the lock button for the 3rd press, for 3 seconds, would be a better way. The 3rd long press, would be something they could push a software update for.

Even on remote start, the car only runs for about 12 minutes. Sure it will fill the garage with carbon monoxide, but my garage has vents, so, I don't think the house would explode. Or wire a carbon monoxide detector into the garage and run it in parallel with the rest of the detectors in the house.

It happened to me a couple of months after I got the car. I think I made a post about it. I deleted the app and have not had it on my phone since.

Luckily I heard the car running from my kitchen which is right next to the garage or we could have died in our sleep

Today my G80 randomly remote started the car and popped the trunk. I didn’t even open the app and was parked for a few hours until someone knocked on my door telling me my car is turned on and trunk wide open.

Since it is impossible for the app to pop the trunk, but for your key to, I’d say the problem is with your key. And it might be user error if it was in your pocket.

At least that explains the trunk. Remote start takes three consecutive hits on the BMW lock button on the key for it to take effect. Is it possible you accidentally did it? Sure. Probable? Likely not. Could the key be defective? Maybe.

You’d need BMW to look at it if it repeats.

This happened to me twice already both when I reached out to pick the phone from the charging area.. Dealer blamed it on the key fob. They said they have seem some of these cars start if the trunk button was pressed for 3 seconds which didn’t make sense since the trunk remained closed. My remote start is disabled. Deleting the App right now.
