Tire Pressure Recommendation Different in App vs. Door Sticker
I got a TPS notification last Thursday saying I should "check tire pressures at my convenience" but the low pressure light didn't come on, so I drove to work and back...receiving the same notification every time I got in my car.
Today I went to fill my tires and looked in the MyBMW app which says recommended tire pressures are 42psi front and 47psi rear. This is odd because the sticker on my door says 38 front and 42 rear. I'm no stranger to having to fill my tires several times a year...especially with RFTs but I'm not sure what to fill them to now because when I hooked my compressor up, the gauge read about 2psi higher than the door sticker for all tires. Should I be filling to the app recommended pressures? I just want the notification to go away. I haven't noticed any difference in steering and handling. It has been cooler at night recently but not enough to cause a significant drop in tire pressure, at least that's my thinking.

From my experience, the recommended front and rear pressures change in the app or vehicle status based on current tire air temperature. It usually starts at the recommended pressure in the door but I noticed the recommended pressures gradually increase by a few PSI as I was driving the car longer. For example, the recommended pressure rising from 38 psi to 41 psi. My best guess is they are trying to make it more accurate for resting tire pressures after you let them cool.

I found that out as well when it kept alerting me to check the pressure. I also sometimes get an alert that the tire pressure is low but all tires show green on the screen, so I have to go through the TPMS reset process & it clears it up. Gotta love technology

I just thought it was odd this time that I received a warning but everything was within spec.

The recommended air pressure on the sticker is static and cold tire temperature while the air pressure in the app and the car is dynamic and is based on ambient and tire temperature. When you drive, the tire heats up causing the air to expand so the required psi to match the recommended cold tire psi is much higher.
Since not all tires heat up equally and the possible variance in sensors, etc. best to fill air when your tire is cold. |

First time bimmer owner here. 2023 G80. At installation, I filled my winter tires to the cold/static pressures in door (32 & 35 psi) and changed the tire settings from summer to winter. I even let some air out with the tire air temps went to 30°F. It's 40°F right now and the pressures are at 33 & 36. However, the app says they should be at 41 & 43.
I'll note that the max psi of the 275/35/19 XL Vredestein Wintrac Pro is 51. Tire air temps got up to ~65° and pressures up to 36 & 38 during a 300 mile nonstop trip doing like 85 in a cold rain. Should I throw a few more pounds in and deviate from the door so I'm getting up to 41/43? Or have I already done what I should do and just need to reset the tire settings? Thanks in advance! |

Unfortunately it's just straight up wrong and will always kick a code until it's deliberately fixed by BMW.
My door says 32 & 35 for cold. I set mine to 33 & 36 in 40°F. Right now, tires are 32 & 35 and tire air temp is 30°F. The app & car say it's low. I drive and get them to 36 & 38 @ ~60°F. Which I'm happy with for my snow/ice tires. Just gonna live w the stupid check code bc I'm pretty sure my pressures are perfect. Am I wrong? |

The crazy high pressures for the g20 vs g80 -
Imo g80 is for track performance and they assume no rest cargo/passengers G20 assumes rear cargo and passenger(s) and optimized for fuel economy and to some degree I wonder preservation of the run flats side wall but I don't know about that |

My understanding, it is only after that procedure, will you see the display of optimum tire pressures, for any given temperature. The optimum working pressure may vary from the recommended cold pressure label on the B-pillar. BTW, you mention the maximum pressure for your tires, (51psi), that's a maximum cold setting pressure. |

The I drive recommended pressure of 43lbs is way too much. Results in rounding of the tire and way too much wear in the center of the tire, especially on the wider rears. Set tire pressure at 35 lbs as recommended by door jam. Getting a low pressure warning on two of the tires, one front, on rear even though they read the same as the other side. Wtf? Will try to bump up pressure to 36 and see if that makes a difference. Also will try the different tire setting options to see if that helps.
I just want to run 35 lbs without my tpms sensors freaking out all the time. Is that too much to ask? Is there a coding option for this?

OK. I will add to the confusion: I have a 2023 m340i xdrive, with square Pirelli run-flat all season tires. The door jam indicates 39psi front, 44psi rear.
To me, this is insanely high. At the recommended pressure the car rides very stiff, I feel everything on the road. Am I the only one with such high recommended tire pressure? I want to lower it to improve ride, but not sure how much I can get away with. |

My BMW dealer recommended 38 psi rather than the 39 psi (cold, static) which is on the placard for my car (staggered 19" setup). I queried this and they said it was the BMW Australia recommendation for local conditions. To be honest I'm not sure that 1 psi makes any real difference.
It interests me that BMW don't specify any change for load or speed. My Jaguar and the family Subaru both have quite different ratings on the placard for heavy load, towing or high speed. I assume BMW just think you'll be going fast all the time .... |
