Seems it's not £10k though. Prices went up but bigger discounts given too. Same difference. Not sure why.

If it’s 10-15 miles each way, I’m not sure the D will be warmed up ! The 340i warms up super quick.., and it is quite amazing what economy you can squeeze out . I also thought about waiting for next the LCI , but was concerned on the fully loaded cost .. which others have also alluded to . Enjoy your first world problem.. how lucky you/we are ! (I find it very stressful and obsessive process ordering / specifying a new car .. drives my wife nuts ..)

Haha yeah I choose to try and engage my wife as little as possible until it’s here!

What did you decide?

I wonder if the residuals on the M340d will be better as it’s the last of these engines. Perhaps depreciation will be small compared to normal as they’ll be desirable by some in 6-12 months+
Just guessing, but logically it makes sense

Opted for the M340d and paid the deposit today. It was a really tough decision but went on a similar logic that there may be an appeal for a 6 cylinder diesel wagon when they are no longer attainable brand new.

Residuals aside, I cannot wait to get it. First drive will be 450+ mile trip to get it home.

With the upcoming LCI2 on the M340i, what are you opinions on whether I should wait or go for it on the diesel?
Hi,
I have a pre facelift M340D touring and it has been brilliant, everything you could want in a car and some.

But I have recently retired so no longer commuting. What I can tell you based on the short journeys that I now do is that the diesel does not warm up quickly. I only state this as the engine has to get up to temp in order for the DPF to burn off. If you are more than not going to be doing low yearly mileage, low mileage daily trips then you run the risk of DPF problems. I have noticed more and more that on shorter journeys the fan will run even after the car is switched off. for a good few minutes with a burning smell, like the car is part way through a DPF burn off.... I get the feeling the car really isn't loving these short trips and I have recently had to have a DPF sensor replaced under warranty....Coincidence??

Which is why I have a M340I touring LCI on order

Similar situation to above in that I've retired and not doing the mileage. However my car warms up quickly enough and on short regular journeys of 6 or 7 miles at 50/60 mph there is no problem with regens. Yes, the fan runs on probably once every 5-6 weeks but thats it. No problems otherwise and just a great all round package. All the oil burners and especially the BMW 6 pots love a good clean out now and again....... happy to oblige!

Interesting point.

My new-to-me '21 plate M340d needed a DPF sensor replaced a couple of weeks back.

The previous owner did longer runs but also a large amount of smaller, urban journeys. My commute isn't long at 12 miles each way, but its pretty much straight motorway and the M340d gets up to temp a lot better than my previous 430d did.

The sensor in question had a common fault on previous generation cars which lead to extended warranties in the US market and some recall actions.

I’m on my third DPF sensor, original, then renewed under warranty and just within the last 5 months another failure, both failures produced a CEL, got green flag out to the last one as the stealers wanted £125 just to diagnose the CEL ffs! Anyway there were a few other ‘faults’, one being the active grille only opening on one side, so need to investigate that further, tho this has not produced a CEL as yet!

The active grille fault was only caught when I put the car into a local independent to replace the DPF. I’m pretty sure the only fault code that was ‘catastrophic failure’ was the DPF when the really helpful green flag guy did the diagnostic.

BTW, Green Flag were reticent to send someone out to check the CEL, advising me to run the car for a hundred or so miles to see if it would clear. I pointed out that if the car went into a ‘limp’ mode, then they’d need to recover anyway and the car is used to ferry children about, they agreed then to send someone out!

I think there must be an inherent fault in these, or I was victim of a faulty batch when renewed under warranty.

Been away in it for a week on holiday to Arran and have had no issues since replacement.

Just this week, I started my M440D cold from sitting over night and drove about 2 Kms into town. About an hour later I returned home and the DPF regen had started. I think the 40Ds get up to temperature relatively quickly compared with previous models. If I remember correctly we now see the coolant temp, as previously it was oil temp.

It is more difficult to tell that a regen is running compared to previous models, but the stop start will generally not engage (noticeable in town), gearbox shift patterns are slightly different. If I sense it is running I just drive around for a short time (any excuse to just keep driving). If you park up during a regen you will get a message on the dash saying the fans will continue to run for X minutes.

Previously I owned an F32 430D and before that an E92 335D Coupe. Over the close to 20 years of 90% short journeys I have never had any problems with the DPFs.

Dathymes Congrats on the new car. Good long journey back to get to know it. Should be perfect to experience its long legged fuel economy. On my return trip last year from Rotterdam to Switzerland (driving normally) I got over 60 mpg.

I am also considering swapping my car as it might not be possible to buy it new again soon. Not quite ready for fully electric yet.

D.

I intend to try and avoid electric as long as I can but I suspect this may the last full combustion engined car I own. All the best in your hunt for the new car!
