2024 M340 Tuning and Exhaust Question

How early can I start tuning and getting an exhaust on the m340i. Is there a break in period if so how long?

1200 miles is recommended as the break in period. Exhaust you don’t have to wait at all, just don’t drive the car too hard in the first 1200miles

+1 on everything except driving the car hard

per the manual, it does not say anything about how you drive the car (I think)

if they did not want you to drive it hard, they would have limited the RPM

My break in procedure is varying the rpm and gears. More engine breaks. Thats it.

There actually is an RPM cap. Manual says to not exceed 4500RPM and 100mph for the first 1200 miles.

i wonder why they dont lock the RPM like they do when before the car warms up.

Ya thats a good point. Not sure why, but im sure they could have easily implemented that, but I guess they just leave it to owners discretion to follow it or not.

In my F80 the RPM gauge had lights that showed a lower redline prior to break in. There are definitely pre-existing ways to do this, however I think its pretty common knowledge you're not supposed to beat on any new car during break in. There are metal shavings and stuff that end up in the lubricants from production tolerance and everything is finding its place. . . I wouldn't recommend driving ANY car WOT and redline for ~~1000 miles, and I would also always recommend an early oil change ~~1500-2000 miles. . . BMW only recommends the standard maintenance oil change on all cars which just seems silly over a few hundred bucks.

From what I’ve read it’s mainly for the tires and brakes. The speed limit part. The rpm is for the rest of the drive train trans etc. I don’t think anything will happen if you don’t adhere strictly. The M cars probably have tighter tolerances and actually have a break in service. So it’s probably more crucial on those. I broke in this car, but most cars I’ve had never followed break in and it was fine.

I don't think the speed or RPM is a factor in the break-in, or BMW can easily force it by locking the RPM.

That said, I always recommend driving the car nice and slow in the first 1200 miles.

Ya I just worded mine wrong I meant not sure why they dont do it but they can if they wanted.

I agree, from what iv read and seen looking at engine build videos from component and assembly working together with tight tolerances point of view, a break in makes sense. WOT causes heavy load on the engine and while its gonna be fine id rather not put that load on a brand new engine while the piston rings set in.. etc and the metal shavings from new components are flowing around. Thats also why I did a break in oil change to clean it up.

Ya that makes sense the speed part. Like you said itll probably be fine if you dont adhere but id rather not put a heavy load(ex:WOT) on a brand new engine while the piston rings set in.. etc and the metal shavings from new components are flowing around.

The B58 is a high performance engine aswell, in my opinion it should honestly have the break in service not just the full on M’s but it would cost BMW money. Thats my 2 cents.

Did you do the break-in oil change at BMW service center or elsewhere?

Ya I did it at local dealer, I know the SA just told him not to reset the service interval so I can still get my free oil change too after. But obviously I had to pay out of pocket for the break in one.

Makes sense. I just picked up my car on Friday and I'm trying to get to 1,200 miles as soon as possible. I'm already at 180 miles and I got some long trips coming up the next 3 weekends.

Nice enjoy the car. The 1200 miles should pass by in no time. It did for me.
