E85 Mixing Question
Hey guys,
I’m considering adding some E85 to my 2020 M340i Xdrive with the 93 mission performance tune. Ran some data logs and tuner said my fuel wasn’t best quality and I’m pulling some timing. Can I add 1-2 gallons of E85 to an almost full tank of 93 to clear up timing? They also have a E30 tune available for Mission which I will try eventually, but I’m confused on the percentages. Downloaded the “E85Cal” app but I’m not sure my “current ethanol level” since pump gas says “contains up to 10% ethanol.” Is there a science to this? Or am I overthinking it? What do you guys do when mixing E? |

If you're just trying to clean up the timing corrections I'd say you're ok to just add a couple gallons to your tank and send logs to MP.
If you're going to get the E30 tune it would be best to test your ethanol source with something like this https://www.amazon.com/Dunkive-Reusa...zcF9hdGY&psc=1 Most stations vary in their E content and E85 can actually be anywhere from E60-E85. Once you know what the actual E content of that station is you can use an E blend calculator to figure out how much you need to add. I use the RaceTools app. I just assume E10 for the normal gas unless otherwise stated |

Most stations run low rather than high on ethanol content, so I usually aim for E35 unsterstanding that I likely will end up around E30. Ha is okay if you are not pushing your tune to the max and you do logs to check. More ideal would be to get a flex fuel sensor and tune.

I'm running a JB4 with 4 gallons of E85 per tank. I started out my logs at map 1 (+3psi) with a full tank of 93octane and BMS said my timing looked poor (low quality fuel most likely). With the 4 gallons E85 I'm now on a custom map 6 (running up to +6.1psi) and with the E85 BMS said my logs/timing look great; so the E85 definitely makes a big difference.
One thing to note; it does smell like kettlecorn when I get on the gas |

I just put in 2 gallons of E85 with an otherwise full tank of 93. Noticible difference! Less bucking, smoother, more responsive and quicker.
Will be doing another datalog at some point to compare it to my 93 only logs. Are there any issues with running E and not having the flex fuel kit? |

I have 2 ethanol content kits the fuel it and one from amazon. They both read the same. I bought them to measure for the MHD e40 tune. They worked perfectly for me. I was always curious how accurate they were so I bought the MHD flex fuel kit and I’ve noticed it takes a few minutes for it to get the correct measurement but it’s pretty much what I measured out with the kit and app. The e85 where I live is usually 85. 83 to 85 sometimes in the summer and 80 to 85 in winter.

I added 2 gal of E85 to 93 and feels sooo much better. Quicker response time on pedal, less bucking in traffic, faster! Lol
Still on the 93 tune by Mission. |

Jumping back in here for a question.
Without a flex fuel sensor or kit, can I safely add 2 gallons of E85 each fill up? Or would you spread out the ethanol on every few tanks? I added a full tank of 93 the other day but don’t want to over add ethanol without a sensor or knowing what’s accurately in there. Thanks |

You should be good up to E30. I just did BM3 Stage 2 MultiMap with Flex Kit and have been trying to dial in the E30 mark (BM3 says up to E40 on MultiMap is ok). Using 5.5-6 gallons as my E85 full tank mix I am right around 31% ethanol. For example I have 1/4 tank to fill, I’ll use 75% of 6 gallons for the E85, then add remaining 93.
I had JB4 before going full tune and would use something like 4.16 gallons of E85 thinking I was hitting 30%. Now that I have the FlexFuel sensor I was running more like 26% with the 4.16 gallons. Even with 26% the timing corrected with JB4. |

Are you using a flex fuel kit or a mixing bottle? Or just winging it? I added another 2.5 gal of E85 yesterday and rest 93. Just worried if I do it every fill up, the ethanol content will slowly rise and cause damage. Still on a 93 tune

I just wait until my tank is almost empty and go to a gas station that sells both 93 octane and E85. I don't use any sort of ethanol content reader/mixing cups etc. I put in 4 gallons E85 and then the rest of 93 octane which would bring the total fill-up to around E30 (assuming the E85 is full 85). The stock fuel system can handle up to E30 so it's not going to hurt anything; you don't need a special tune or anything. The reason I'm running the 4 gallons is because with my JB4 my timing was poor even at +3psi. With 4 gallons E85 I can run over +6psi and my timing is still great (BMS confirmed in my logs).
