How to reset oil life on LCI (iDrive 8)
Hello all,
I have a 2023 G42 M240i and I just did my first DIY oil change at 2,000 miles. I followed the Kies video for the G20 and it’s almost identical for my G42… except for the iDrive 8 part. Wondering if any of you LCI G20 folks have changed your own oil and reset the oil life? I tried holding the BC button in diagnostics mode but I don’t get an option to reset oil status. Only see brake service stuff. I was able to check the oil level in Vehicle Status, but nothing regarding logging the oil change. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I end up getting the answer, I will update this OP Edit: thanks Krisp97 ,confirmed working for me as well Last edited by TJZ67201; 10-19-2024 at 01:38 PM.. |

Many folks with cars under warranty don’t reset the minder for a DIY change, and then have the dealer still do an oil change at the normal interval for free. This way you get an additional oil change, but all the BMW-prescribed warranty maintenance is still recorded and uploaded to BMW.
I switched vehicles and it’s been a while since a DIY oil change. On the F30 it was simple to reset the oil change minder, but I haven’t tried it on my G20. |

Revisiting this thread as I still have not found a way to reset the oil life on iDrive 8. Anyone out there figure it out? Would be nice to know for my next oil change which will still be below the recommended 10k miles.

I have figured this out thanks to the help of texting my service advisor. I also work in the car business and couldnt even figure this out lol.
Step 1: Get in the car, without turning on the engine, TRIPLE TAP the start button without your foot on the brake. This will enter it into Diagnostic Mode. Step 2: Click the BC button on the left stock to take it to the odometer. This is where things get tricky. Step 3: While in the odometer screen, press and HOLD the BC button. You quite literally have to guess when to release the button. It is somewhere around 15-20 seconds. If you hold it for too long, the menu with "Identification, Chassis Dyno" etc. It is likely going to take some trial and error. Step 4: When you release it at the right time, it will pop up a menu regarding Oil Change reset. To enter the reset screen, press and hold BC for about 2-3 seconds then release. It will ask if you want to Reset? Repeat the same thing and Press and hold BC 2-3 seconds then release. If you just click the BC, it will cycle through different things that are eligible to reset. If you press and hold too long, it will exit the menu. Lots of trial and error. This worked on my G80 M3 after I figured out the trick of not holding down the BC button for too long. Hope this helps everyone wondering how to do it on ID8.
