Beware of the Starter Recall
Took my 2020 G20 M340 to the dealer for the Starter recall.
It is now actually 2 separate recalls, one for programing to shut down the starting procedure if the starter begins to overheat to avoid fires, and the other is a starter motor replacement for faulty starter. My car had been experiencing long cranking in the morning even after installing a brand new battery, so I thought this might fix it. What happened is that they did the programming and then claimed that according to BMW testing procedures, my starter is fine. The very next time after I left the dealer, I could not start my car. What is happening now is that after two cranks, the new programming will stop the starting procedure and display "Engine start possible in180 seconds" message. I had to cycle through this message 3 times before the car was able to start. I am very pissed and taking the car back tomorrow, I clearly have a faulty starter but they are trying to get away with the programming part of the recall which does nothing to fix the underlying problem, instead it just makes it impossible to start the car when the starter is already warm. BMW have sunk to such a low level of customer support, it is pathetic. And yes, my Bimmercode programming was all wiped, and I assume any tuning would also get wiped by this recall. |

Was given the same news when I took my car in last week for maintenance that the starter recall was separated. I've never had any issues cranking the car. My SA knows that my car is tuned and said they can health check the starter motor for me but not touch the software which they did.

Hmmm took mine in, told them I was tuned, told them I don't care if it's overwritten (2020, I have mhd bench unlocker). They said no problem, but called me 2 hours later that they won't do the starter reprogramming till I removed the tune. Wondering if they've been having issues with tuned cars and the starter update?

I dealt with this about 2 months ago with Crevier BMW and the starter software update. They warned me that they have the right to refuse doing the recall service due to the tune but that they would attempt to do the update first.
It worked out. Wiped my tunes so I had to re-unlock. Never noticed any issues starting the car before or after the recall service. Running pretty good @ 65k miles |
