Just bought an m440 and already want an m3
I bought a new '25 m440'and already want to upgrade to an m3. Has anyone else felt this way and took the plunge? I have about 1,800 miles on the car and its still mint. I assume I will take a hit on depreciation but cant get the m3 off my mind. I got a great deal on the 440 btw.
Should I take the plunge or be happy with what I have 🤪 |

I came out of a 2021 540 w/M sport to get my 2025 M440 GC (34K miles). No practical reason to sell that car, but couldn't get it out of my mind after a test drive 6 months after I got the 540. I've had it a month and it will be a daily driver here in MA. Hard to go faster than this car will go where I live and I'm not going to take her to the track. That said, read line 1 again. |

I had the same thought after I bought my M340, I was patient and ended up loving my M340 more and more and now would not give it up for an M3 as I've come to love the duality of the car.

Do it. Why not?
If the M3 fits, and there are no financial issues for you, it would be quite an upgrade. Plan on your insurance premiums to double, and forget about getting a good deal on one. In my area they are at MSRP, and sell off the lot in days, when a new one comes in. Only thing I’d consider is order a new 25, or wait awhile for the 26. |

The b58 is an amazing engine and way better daily driver than M cars. I have an X4M comp that I love but its frustrating to drive in traffic and on long trips. My 330i is more enjoyable for daily driving. Don't think for a second that you are compromising by driving an m440i, its still an amazing machine.

Thanks guys. Yah I live in socal where you soend 99% of your time in traffic. The m440 is already plenty fast for the street. I drive in sport + and was complaining to a buddy about gas. I cant imagine how much it will cost to keep an m3 full.
Question. Does the m3 in comfort drive like the m440 in sport +? Ive never had the chance to test an m3 yet. Oh and the insurance comment has me thinking twice. My monthly is already $600 for the cars I have. Ughh |

I could get an M3 financially it is not an issue, but I could not stand the look and I wanted something a bit more comfortable.Deciding factor was M3 design and it is not for me, even if it is cheaper than M340 I would never drive that car. Got loaded M340 with MPE. May get dedicated weekend 2 seater like 911 or some other exciting good looking car in the future.

I dont know how the m3 is in comfort but my x4m comp is way too stiff even in comfort and the suspension in comfort/sport/sport+ only changes the rebound and does not offer a true comfort setting. I would assume the same for the m3. The b58 is a true gem and it's not a step down from an m3 its just a different kind of car, the m440 is a good balance between comfort and sportiness and probably faster than previous gen m3's.
I personally would keep the m440 and be extremely happy with it. If you want to get it out of your system go test drive an m3 and see what suits your needs. But spending 90% of your commute in traffic the m440i would be a far better superior car. Last edited by aardate; 12-10-2024 at 01:00 PM.. |

Think about:
If most of the time you’ll be stuck in stop-and-go traffic, getting lousy gas mileage, and you never take it to a track day, why bother getting a high strung and thirsty M car that will cost a lot more to own and insure? On the other hand, if money isn’t an issue, why not? I don’t know what the market is where you are, but you already know that a car takes a depreciation hit the moment you drive it off the lot. (I gather that the days of appreciating used cars are over.) You’ll take an additional hit when you buy the M. That said, you have a perfectly good car now. You can order an M set up exactly the way you want it, drive your current car, then take delivery of the M in SC at the performance school. N.B. I bet you will get a lot better gas mileage if you don’t drive in Sport+ all the time, especially when you’re just droning on the highway or in slow traffic where it’s not needed. Also, you probably want Driver Professional (or whatever it’s called), to help with the tedium of stop and go traffic.

When at the dealer to test an M340i, we asked about M3s. With a total wait time of up to a year including waiting for a production slot we decided to not take one out for a test. Probably for the best. The M340 will be a daily and we’re coming from a 328i, so it’ll be plenty fast.

I think you guys have talked me off the ledge. I wish I had unlimited funds but I dont. On top of that Im already a bit on edge driving the m440 in fear of simeone hitting me or door dinging. I know its not a lambo, but maybe just trying to preserve whats new. I just got out of a 540 lease and never felt this way driving that car. With an m3 it may just be more of a hassle than pure enjoyment.

Doesn't sound like you've test driven one. So perhaps start from there and decide if you still want it. If it's just for the additional power, looks or status that's fine too - it's your money.
The comments about stiffness may not be applicable in SoCal depending on the road conditions for your commute. Moreover it's been reported on this forum that the MY25 has a much more complaint suspension (at least on the G20, not sure of M3.) That said, for a daily, M3 just isn't practical but then again it boils down to personal preference. Last edited by zazzau; 12-11-2024 at 12:39 PM.. |

got an 2025 m440, always wanted an m4 but never drove one. the way they're priced out now the difference between my m440 (78k) vs a xdrive m4 is like 20k more. just couldn't justify the price.

California issues. I was paying roughly $5,800 for two vehicles with higher than normal coverage, but still too expensive in my eyes considering I have no accidents or tickets in 10 years.
Recently went out and scouted quotes again. Switched to progressive and reduced my premiums in half with same coverage.

A lot of good feedback here, but one big misconception that the G8x is not a good daily driver. Every reviewer or owner would argue it is. With 4WD now available for inclement weather, the M3/M4 has actually never been better as a year round daily driver than it is now. The suspension is a little less soft, but nothing that should stop anyone from wanting to drive it.
Chiming in because at some point a potential M car owner might read this thread and get dissuaded from buying a G8x. Don't get me wrong, there are many reasons that could pop up to not buy one (chugs fuel, expensive to maintain, etc.), but not being a good daily driver shouldn't be on anyone's list. |
