Looking for Advice: Buying a Pre-Owned BMW M340i on a $43K Budget
Hi everyone,
I'm currently in the market for a pre-owned/used BMW M340i, and I’d appreciate any advice or help with my search. My budget is $43K (up to $43.5K max, if necessary). Here’s what I’m ideally looking for: Model year: 2020 or newer Mileage: Under 40K miles Clean title I know this might be a lot to ask for, but I believe it’s possible. For example, I recently found a great deal at BMW of Jackson, Mississippi—a 2021 RWD M340i in Sunset Orange with decent packages and 18K miles for $43K OTD (clean title). Unfortunately, I got a bit greedy and hesitated, and someone else snagged it. Given my criteria, what’s reasonable to ask dealerships in terms of mileage and pricing? Am I being realistic with my expectations? If you have any tips, leads, or advice on finding an M340i that fits my budget, I’d be super grateful. Thanks in advance! |

I think that’s reasonable criteria, for that budget you should be able to find many examples from 2020-2022. The 20s are arguably the most desirable as they are not mild hybrids, have a louder exhaust, and more tuning potential if that’s something that interests you. The 21 and 22 will look the same but are mild hybrids. You’ll also have to decide on RWD or xDrive. I have an xDrive and I really like the way it puts power down, especially living in the Northeast but obviously that might not matter to everyone.

I just recently purchased a 2021 m340i Xdrive. Price was $49k but it came with cognac leather interior, fully loaded w exec package (collision detection, drive assist & parking package & all). Also 12.5k miles. When I was shopping I knew I wanted it to be fully loaded (especially leather), as well as low mileage as possible.
Prior to this car I had a 2018 340i Xdrive, and when I was shopping for that in ‘21 I simply wanted the cheapest 340i I could find (with xdrive because I live in the northeast). So it was basically a base model spec 340i (aside from M sport & xdrive). It didn’t come with CarPlay, HUD, or any other options, and had an older iDrive system compared to other 2018 340i’s. After driving it for 3 years I realized I was definitely missing out on some amazing options, so my advice is to save up some extra money if possible and wait until you can get one with more features, especially if you plan on having the car for a while. |

Consider a CPO car from a BMW dealer. There are a lot of BMWs that were driven hard, have been in accidents, maybe flood damage.
Pros can move cars around states to avoid salvage titles. They know who they can buy off to get records added/removed. Lots of younger buyers never bother with maintenance. My bro sold cars for years, tells of people trading in cars 4 years old that NEVER had an oil change. You are buying an expensive car. At least if a CPO car you have some protection. One example. My wife was rear ended in her 328. Body shop and insurance co. never told DMV, so when we sold it, the buyer was shocked that CarFax and others had no record it was in an accident. We were honest with them, most sellers would not be. Buyer beware |

You might have to wait a long time before finding something below 40k miles at that price, especially if that’s your OTD limit. It’s possible, but you might want to expand your range and mileage if you don’t want to wait months and months.
