Attempt to fix issue with Head Unit > Cluster black

Hallo All,

I upgraded my BMW G20 from 8.8 to 10.25 display according to this post: https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2013844

I did the coding with Bimmercode.

Everything worked well, except when the car went into deep sleep, the display stayed black, unless I did a reboot of the head unit (30 sec on/off button).

Today I attempted to fix this by restoring all control units by re-writing the back-up files.

After flashing the instrument cluster, it stayed black and did not display anymore anything. I also can't connect anymore to the instrument cluster with Bimmercode (it's not in the list).

Can annyone support here? I was reading online and understood I could possibliy solve this by using Esys. Is that correct?

Today I installed the full version of E-Sys, I'm now waiting for the cable I ordered.

How I understand the following steps from reading forum posts:

- I need to read ECU
- Find KOMBI
- Right click > Detect CAF

If the CAFD is missing, E-Sys will suggest a CAFD file.

- Then code

Is this correct? Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks!

Way above my head ! But I did run your question through AI and it came up with the below. Maybe there is something in there that will help you if nobody else chimes in. Sorry I couldn’t help more !

STEP-BY-STEP (DKOMBI recovery)

1. Connect to the car
  1. Open E-Sys
  2. Click Connect
  3. Select:
  4. Target: G20
  5. Interface: Connection via VIN (ENET)
  6. Hit Connect

2. Read ECU list (SVT)
  1. Go to:
  2. Expert Mode β†’ VCM
  3. Click:
  4. Read ECU

πŸ‘‰ This loads the full ECU tree
3. Check for DKOMBI

Look for:
  • DKOMBI

πŸ‘‰ If DKOMBI IS PRESENT

This is the best-case scenario.
4A. Detect CAFD (MOST IMPORTANT STEP)
  1. Go to:
  2. Expert Mode β†’ Coding
  3. Click:
  4. Read ECU (Coding)
  5. In left panel:
  6. Find DKOMBI

If it shows NO CAFD (or red/missing):
  1. Right-click DKOMBI
  2. Click:πŸ‘‰ Detect CAF for SWE
  3. Select the suggested CAFD (usually only one option)
  4. Click OK

5A. Code the module

After CAFD appears:
  1. Right-click DKOMBI
  2. Click:πŸ‘‰ CODE

⏳ Wait 1–2 minutes
πŸ‘‰ Your cluster should reboot and come back
πŸ‘‰ If DKOMBI IS PRESENT but HAS CAFD

Still try:
  1. Right-click DKOMBI
  2. Click CODE

Sometimes it’s just corrupted coding, not missing CAFD.
🚨 If DKOMBI DOES NOT SHOW UP

This is your situation most likely.
4B. Try detecting via SVT Actual
  1. Go to:
  2. Expert Mode β†’ TAL Processing
  3. Click:
  4. Read SVT (Actual)

πŸ‘‰ See if DKOMBI appears here
If it appears here but NOT in coding:

You can:
  • Inject CAFD using same method above

❌ If DKOMBI is completely missing everywhere

Now we escalate.
πŸ”₯ LAST RESORT (still E-Sys)

TAL Processing (reflash attempt)

This is more advanced but still doable.
1. Go to:
  • Expert Mode β†’ TAL Processing

2. Load:
  • FA (vehicle order) β†’ Read FA
  • SVT Actual β†’ Read SVT

3. Calculate TAL
  • Click:πŸ‘‰ Calculate TAL

4. In TAL options:

Select:
  • blFlash
  • swDeploy
  • cdDeploy
  • ibaDeploy

5. Target ONLY DKOMBI

VERY IMPORTANT:
  • In ECU list β†’ select ONLY DKOMBI

6. Execute TAL
  • Click:πŸ‘‰ Start

⏳ This will attempt to reflash the cluster firmware
⚠️ If TAL fails or DKOMBI not listed

At this point:
πŸ‘‰ You need ISTA+
ISTA can:
  • detect dead modules better
  • perform recovery flash
  • reinitialize ECUs

πŸ’€ Absolute worst case

If:
  • E-Sys = no DKOMBI
  • ISTA = no communication

πŸ‘‰ The cluster is:
  • soft-bricked beyond recovery
  • or hardware failure

➑️ Replacement + programming required
