Great post OP! If possible, could you (or someone) share your thoughts between M440i and 5 series?

Honestly, Idk why you call the M340i boring. It was not meant to be an M2. I drive a Porsche GT4. That is an exciting car. But it could not do what the M340i can do. Haul 5 butts from point A to point B without making me fuss how the engine or transmission is lacking. Given the options of the category. I can say the M340i is well balanced. I does everything well. I am shock that you did not do anything to improve the car. I mean it has everything going on for it. It also drives surprisingly well in the Snow.

If you want comfort. Do the 5 series but wait until they put the B58 TU2. So the HP is around 370 hp. Right now its 330 hp.

You quoted the wrong person. He never called the M340i boring.

If you're going to do this, please start a different thread with its own proper subject line.

It would be a fun thread to read--and very worth doing.

Agreed. Pretty sure I said the M340i was actually more lively and fun to drive. From a looks point-of-view, the M340i is understated, but isn't that the point? The M440i GC is much more bold and stylish, but again... isn't that the point? The M340i is supposed to fly under the radar, while the M440i GC is supposed to stand out a bit more.

Also, I totally just hit 110 MPH on a bridge somewhere in Mexico… and it was completely effortless. This thing is a certified Autobahn Super Cruiser!

I keep being blown away. I thought the M340i was very good, but the M440i GC feels that much better.

I agree 110%. So much so that I'm now starting to question the G80 competition I have on order. I got my G26 to hold me over but now I'm seriously considering keeping it.

I hit 130 mph at my local highway. Just a 5 mile stretch. I hate the feeling of the 130 limiter.

I was in line to get an M3 Competition, but I kept on wavering back and forth between the M3 Comp and M440i GC. I knew the M3 Comp was going to be an absolute ball to drive but that the M440i GC was going to be a better daily driver.

I floated both builds to my CA, and eventually he convinced me to get the M3 Comp. So I put in an order and forgot about it. 2-3 months later, I got a call saying that the M440i GC I specced had come in. I told him that he had convinced me to get the M3 Comp, and he said "Ok". Eventually curiosity got the better of me, so I went in... and I left with the M440i GC.

Not one single regret. I would have loved the added power of the M3 Comp, but the comfort level is so high on the M440i GC that I don't miss the extra power. In fact, I probably would have sold the M3 Comp sooner rather than later because I would have convinced myself it was too harsh for daily driving. Definitely don't feel like that on my M440i GC; the suspension tuning is absolutely sublime.

Agreed. Not to mention the GC’s superior gas mileage and presumably lower costs to maintain.

The gas mileage and the hatch were my chief reasons for going with the GC over the M3, as I always thought I’d end up back in an M3 at some point.

I might have, were it not my one and only car but just a pleasure vehicle. That’s not the case currently.

Just to point out that M440 GC is as powerful as a base M3.

Common now, I love my M440GC, but this statement is a bit of a stretch. According to BMW specs, M3 base 0-60 is 4.1s. For the M440GC, it is 4.4s. Close, but not the same. And it is probably this close only because the M3 base does not come in xDrive. The AWD would have probably shaved off a couple more tenths of a second on the M3.

BTW, why is the M340i not listed on this page in "THE ATHLETES" section? The M240i xDrive and M440i xDrive are included, but not the M340i xDrive. Instead they included the M235i xDrive???? What gives?

I wish. The M3 base 6-speed has 473 HP, while the M440i GC has 382 HP. The M440i GC would take the M3 from a dig, but from a roll and in corners, the M3 would be much faster.

Quick update.

Tried launch control for the first time tonight. It’s tunnel vision inducing. Felt like 4 seconds 0-60. Off the line, this thing is nuts!!!

Since you asked…

Because I value cargo capacity; and rarely have anyone in the back seat, you'd assume I'd choose a GC but I prefer the sedan. Even if they looked exactly the same.

I prefer the lighter, stiffer sedan body; and the fact that a sedan has a completely separate trunk instead of just a package tray. Actually, my distaste for sharing the interior and cargo area is a big reason why I wouldn't choose a wagon or SUV either. I really like having a proper trunk.

I felt obligated to reply here since my opinion matters....

THE NEW 4 SERIES IS COMPLETELY RUINED BY THE NEW GRILLS!!!

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS!!!

Dude, I got mine 1 month ago.
Got AA downpipe, now its just perfect. Its soft when she needs to be soft, and she gets stiff when I want to take her for a spin. I am so happy I went 4 over 3. Best choice I have ever made.

Oh and let's be honest, who cares about the grill? Once you inside and driving it I can care less what she looks like in front, she looks better from behind

I went with the m440 GC because the exterior is more aggressive over the m340 plus there are a lot of 330/340 on the roads but there are not a lot of m440 GC.
