Interesting...
I would personally be more reassured to pay 30-40K for a used car that is under BMW warranty...

I believe Porsche is using the manufacturer CPO as a selling tool for its used cars and does not offer it to the individuals.

BMW uses CPO as a selling point also. BMW’s ESC can only be transferred to a new owner if it is a private sale. The old owner has to request the transfer.

Agreed
My point is that if dealers use it as a selling point, the same would apply to individuals for resale value on high priced cars (in addition to the repair costs etc).
I used to own a Porsche and could not buy a extended manuf warranty at the end of my 4 years...partly because dealers want to control the used car market

I know what you are saying but you need to consider the initial cost of the ESC when looking at the future value of what it and the vehicle is worth. From what I have seen they are worth very little in the used car market in private sales. Some people may search out vehicles that have them but likely only a very few do that.

true, it is not so straightforward.
I guess deciding on an ESC around year 3-4 would make sense based on vehicle condition, mileage etc

Yes, that would seem to be the best plan of action.

I agree with most of the statements above.

-I usually buy extended warranties before the initial warranty expires and never at the time of sale as you can get a better deal later on.

-I rarely keep a car more than 3 years and I have usually no idea how long I will keep the car at the time of purchase.

-I just bought my M340 and it did have some interesting warranty claims so far and I will most likely buy the Platinum warranty as a piece of mind.

-If I were in the market for a used BMW, I would pick one with an extended warranty over another car if buying privately, same applies to CPO vs non CPO cars. Having said that, as an owner, I wouldn’t expect to get more money out of my car just bec it has an extended warranty.

- TurtleBoy makes some great points on this matter for sure. My 4 year - 50k warranty will expire Sep 2023 and I will buy the warranty couple of months prior to expiration if I decide to keep the car.

Care to elaborate on the interesting warranty claims? As a M340i buyer (scheduled for production next week), I’m curious what I may be in for.

Most of it varies by when your car was build TBH.

The biggest one for me was a $4800 claim due to power mirror failure that ended up frying bunch of stuff with it. Car was at the dealer for about 2 months. It’s a pretty common failure with my build date (Aug 2019) and dealer had to throw bunch of parts at it to get it all sorted out. The chance of that happening alone would convince me to buy the extended warranty.

Parts that were replaced were:
-Body domain control module
-Both power mirror assemblies
-All power control switches on drivers side

Car has been rock solid besides that hick up.

2019 is G20's first model year, which may still be fine tuned to improve reliability. The same happen to my 2013 F30 which is still barely 9 months into F30 US shipping, it had accumulated 70 Davis days on various issues. In contrast, my previous E39 LCI, and current F30(3rd model yr) is relatively trouble free.

My M340ix was produced in Oct 2019. When did the mirror failure occur? I am planning to buy the car in December at the end of the lease.
Thanks!

Thanks!
It occurred in Feb of 2022.

It is an issue across all G platform cars and there are several threads about it.

I just bought mine off the lease and will buy the extended warranty before the original warranty expires next year.

If that is the lowest from the folks I posted then it is likely that is the going price.

I think I got lucky when I secured mine but the market has changed so don't expect to get much lower than that quote. Here's one my friend got recently:

60 months/75k miles $2750
60 months/100k miles $3050

72 months/75k miles $3300
72 months/100k miles $3750

In the past the MSRPs of ESCs are on VIRs, so u may see if those are still listed.

E.g. F30 328i 84 months/100k platinum was $3600 MSRP. Dealer costs were $600-$800 below MSRPs, so that platinum ESC was $2800-$3000 dealer cost. The best quote in SoCal/NorCal at the time was $3200.

Bought out my lease today on an m340 and I opted for the 60 months/75k miles plan at $2,299.

I was quoted $2,400 for new brake pads and rotors all around which is covered under the warranty, so that alone was enough to sell me on it.

No, they are not covered by the extended service contract (extended warranty). Are you maybe referring to a maintenance contract?

Nah! Breaks are not covered under warranty. Not that I'm aware of
