I'm just here for the comments from M3 owners and M340i owners.

I still remember the amazing discussions of how the E92 335i was superior to E92 M3 because of 0-60, great torque etc.

The overall feel of a true M is incomparable. Not taking anything away from the 340i, it's a nice car... had it as a loner from BMW.

There's no doubt that's impressive but the M340i with a few options now costs $60k. At that price, considering it's just a regular 3 series with a powerful motor, is it that impressive? The F30 340ix with MPPSK (which is equivalent to the M340i xDrive) was doing 0-60 in the low 4s as well.
I'd still rather drive a RWD manual (or DCT) F80. It is far more fun. |

Not really - new gen vs old gen isn't a worthwhile comparison.
Try this - Pick below A or B Choice 1: A) used 30 year old E30M3 B) 2019 Toyota Camary which is way faster in a straight line Choice 2: A) 2017 340M sport 6 speed which is good looking and fun to drive B) a 2020 340M sport which looks like a Camary and is faster but only comes with an automatic transmission If you chose B in either case then strap a full beer keg to your back and jump off the tallest nearby building. |

Agreed
Actually the most fun car I have ever driven is a 2011 1 m which is probably slower than many regular bimmers these days |

Why ?
The 100-200km/h tells the true story: M3: 12.7 - 4.3 = 8.4s M340i 14.1 - 4.1 = 10.0s

Different beasts for different people.
I enjoy having a car that stands out slightly from the crowd, you can tell an M car from a mile away. Not gonna lie, I've mistaken a 2020 Corolla for a G20 a couple times at night. Launching it was fun (had a tuned F16 X6 50i), but I never took a detour just to drive the car longer like I did on my M3 and do so currently on my M4. The first time I turned the steering wheel in the M4 it brought back the happiness I had in my E92 M3.

Also, all the F30 cars had terrible suspenions. If you threw on some coilovers or M Performance suspension, you would be surprised how it transforms the car. The F30 interior and steering still sucked, but then again the G20 M340i steering kinda sucks too. And it's bigger and heavier. I don't want to make it seem like I'm a hater though. I really wanted an M340i and would have bought one if it came in a manual. |

I wonder how many "enthusiasts" out there don't understand that an M car is so much more than 0-60 times.
These M performance models can win all the acceleration tests for all I care. I'd still go for an M car, provided BMW don't keep diluting the formula with bigger and heavier cars. |

I mean this is great but then if the m340 is this good then what will the new m3 be about? You can get an f80 m3 for a pretty low price now compared to the m340...

Oh no, not another "last gen m3" vs "current 3 series" debates. This is a rivalry that transcends generations. They're both wonderful cars intended for overlapping, but also, at the same time, different preferences.
