Picked up my new X5 today and experienced this all day. I took it back to the dealer and they said the display looked fine. I opened the the drivers door and the display went bright again.
Has there been any new updates here to resolve this? |

Nothing that I'm aware of. That said, it took them over a year to fix a software bug that kept the passenger seat from pre-heating during remote start, with my two dealers failing to even acknowledge there was a problem at any point along the way. So I wouldn't be surprised if there is a fix in the queue, but BMW gives owners no way to access any information of the sort so we'd have no clue if there were. They don't even give us a direct line of contact to report the issues at a corporate level, it all has to go through the dealers. Which in my experience have been utterly useless when it comes to these kinds of things. They tend to only give a sh!t if it's something they can bill for.

Sorry about resurrecting this thread, but just offering an update that I have communicated with the good people at Bimmercode and was told there is no solution available.
As far as BMW doing anything, I believe we know the answer to that. None of my local dealers will do anything nor escalate the issue - although they at least admit to knowing of the problem (FWIW). My $9 pen light has been ordered, ought to look real good with my $70K car......Just can decide how I am going to mount it yet. |

Please, keep us posted. I'm ready to scrap my tinting on the fronts and get the dyed tint - my little pen light didn't get the job done. |

Predator 007,
Just curious if you had any luck or commentary from your dealer the other day?? On a related note, I wrote the Pres/CEO of BMWNA with a description of the situation and let him know of the concerns of many. No, I am not naive and do not expect this to move the needle, but wanted to be heard. I'll let you know if I hear anything back. |

I just sent him an email as well. Maybe if we generate enough noise through feedback we will see a fix. |

BMWNA called me today based on the email I sent, so that was a surprise! I let them know I'm seeing this on my new G05 as well as the G20 we picked up last month. They're looking into options and will get back to me. Keep you guys posted!

How much do you want to bet they blame "aftermarket tint" as the problem (even if you had it installed at a dealership).

Oh, there is no doubt they will blame it on the tint, that is the "go-to" answer. The key to get across is that this dims on non-tinted windows as well. If they don't believe it, take their cell phone light outside to their car and shine the light and watch how much brighter it can get.
I told them in my letter that I believed the car should be no different than the lighting on a cell phone. Auto for those that desire that but manually controllable for those who wish to have something different. Quite simple, really...... |

or how about just an override to turn off the auto dimming feature - I don't know why that has to be automated (unless it will impact other systems), for years we've had the volume type rolling button to manually set the display...

Agree totally and was one of the items I also put in my letter to them. Here were the 3 options I outlined as reasonable, easy fixes.
1. Have the system default to total brightness and allow the user to adjust the lighting with the scroll wheel. 2. Put a function in iDrive that disables/enables this IR Sensor, defaulting to the brightest setting and allowing control. 3. Allow us to adjust the brightness in iDrive. My thought is keep it simple and something they could easily understand. I hardly even referenced window tint at all, as while a problem on its own, is NOT the sole issue here. |

For those still following this thread, I received a call from the BMWUSA HQ as a follow-up to my letter to the CEO.
The usual pass-the-buck, "have you talked to the dealer", etc. She said she would escalate internally and let me know something by early next week - but not to get my hopes up of a quick solution. (no kidding) She did ask if I had my windshield tinted which I do not. That may have helped a little bit, at least caused her a moment or two of pause. More to follow, hopefully. |

I picked up my new X6 last Saturday and brought it back to the dealer today to have the front windows tinted. My directions to them were tint the fronts to match the back windows. I picked up the X6 this afternoon and thought the tint looked amazing. Too bad my dash is so dim I have to squint 🤣🤣🤣

Hey Mynoles1 - any update on this? I've got an 2020 X3MC with iDrive 6 and it has this issue as well. I am annoyed by it when driving, but when backing out of a spot on a sunny day it is very difficult, and therefore dangerous, to see the backup camera. At times I will roll down my windows to resolve (not ideal). I was thinking of just wiring a small LED to a switched power source but I'm concerned about how bright the dash would be at night. |

This allows you to control the brightness of the control screen but not the cluster or HVAC controls. I cranked mine up to full so the control screen stays that way day or night and I no longer have to think about it. I didn’t discover this, just passing along. Check out my post about half way down this thread: https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1747342&highlight=Dimming&page=2 |
