Now back to the engine. The S58 has 3d printed heads, high-g capable oil sump (to avoid oil starvation on track), much bigger and more heat exchangers, TWO turbos, bigger exhaust, new pistons, conrods, crank, cylinder walls, higher pressure injectors, and that's just the stuff we know of. Once people start cracking open the S58, I'm sure we'll find more interesting stuff. Most likely the engine block is a unique part with strong cylinder walls and more cooling and oil channels. We know the heads are 3D printed partially for that reason. It's a guarantee that the G80 will have unique hood, quarter panels, fenders, roof, front and rear bumpers. It'll definitely have unique suspension components and revised suspension geometry. It'll definitely have unique M3 seats. You don't have to be an insider to know that. Other stuff? We'll find out soon. None of that stuff is available on any G20. Oh, and back to the chassis codes. Notice the M340i is still considered a G20. I wonder why BMW has a unique chassis code just for the M3? |

It's not about price.
Even if they make it M399 or whatever it still wouldn't be an M3.

The brand dilution is real in this ad... going to "M town" in an M340i?
"Hey M" was a cringe moment too, need I say any more since when were M-lites considered in the same league as full M cars??? I'm all for this mid-performance market and sportier branding/styling - but not at the cost to the top tier performance models : |

Meh… I still don’t understand spending the time, effort and money on a commercial to sell a product but then show very little about that product. And what little you show is mostly generic zoom zoom shots.

What baffles me is the 'aura' around M created by some M owners. It is almost sounding like a cult.
M cars are commoner on the parking lots of big groceries than M performance cars especially M3s BMW has clearly differentiated the M performance and full M cars in their naming. It seems the presence of M in the naming of M performance cars bothers some people for no reason Porsche has cars without S in their name, then S, then GTS etc. I don't see this level of indignation. AMG 43 and AMG 63 are accepted much more for what they by AMG fanboys compared to M fanboys

I think some of you are being too diplomatic. ///M cars are not the same as the standard series cars with M badging. We know it and any BMW enthusiast knows it. The difference in performance and price isn't the same either.
That being said, BMW is making their cars faster and better every year. A 340i today is so much faster than the previous 335i equivalent, with or without M badging. The 340i is also faster than most older M3 models. This is just how it is. Porsche is the same way. A new Cayman S will own an older 911.

I think the whole "is it an M argument" is pointless
BMW has expanded the concept of what an M is over time. M in 1999 is not the same as M in 2009 M in 2009 is not the same as M in 2019 BMW owns the brand and they decide what an M is... period. Customers like to think they decide but ultimately the only input customers really have is voting with wallets. If the "M performance variants (m240, m550, etc) had fallen on their face then they would disappear back into regular series models. There is certainly is fair debate over whether one likes the evolution or not. We all have our own personal feelings about what an M should be... but that doesn't change what an M is. Maybe people will stop buying M3s because they see an M340 called an M in an advertisement. That's the only way to stop the expansion... but I suspect it won't happen |

Ok. How about this. Once you put your car on a track (even just DE) for over 5,000 miles, you get an mbadge for it. Before that it is "M-pending". And it can be any BMW as I know a lot of chump cars that deserve the M they never had.

The first 50 seconds of this shootout pretty much sums up this thread!! But seriously, I don't get what all the fuss is about... If you're happy with your M car enjoy it! Same for the M-sport crowd. Do you really think 90% of the daily driving we do, stop light to stop light or highway cruising, is going to make that much of a difference?? Yes, running a heated lap around the track will definitely expose ///M vs Msport, but if we're both driving to get groceries or just to get to work dealing with bumper to bumper traffic, it all becomes negligible... Granted I love the M4 and visceral feel when I can open it up, but living in Ohio\Michigan, I rarely get the opportunity between idiot drivers, traffic cameras, and stealthy cops!! Now if I was living near the Black Forest! Last edited by BigSky702; 03-17-2019 at 01:53 PM.. |

BMW has been designating cars as M Sport/Performance for forty years now. It’s nothing new. For 1979 BMW offered the E12 M535i.
