You are late to the game I'm afraid.

The next gen G80 M3 will be awd AND ZF torque converter. Apparently it's designed as a sedan version of X3M.

M went from motorsport to street poser.

For me it was my e46, not so much the engine but more so the balance of sport and comfort

The engine wasn't the most powerful back then, but it didn't matter as the m3 was supposed to be all about the chassis

It was also the best time for the sports sedan imo, you could have a sublime chassis that was a definite step up from the donor car, without a harsh ride/nvh - this seems to be a lost art now as manufacturers are making these cars way too stiff for the journo praise at track day launches

People complained about the E46 ///M3's stiffness. I can't count how many times a member on E46Fanatics complained about the car being too stiff for daily driving. Pusses!

Nearly 30 years in waiting before I arrived at a place in life where I could afford a new ///M car. And even still it makes no sense whatsoever. But it doesn't need to and that's why these cars (regardless of generation or trim) transcend time. It's why year after year they serve as the benchmark for the competition. Regardless of the distance from its original racing heritage, ///M will always mean something! And to an old guy like me — it means everything. F'ed up as this may sound, I am more connected to my car than I am to my wife of 25-years. I understand my car better than either of my teenage daughters. I feel more pride for all I am capable of behind the wheel than I do in my profession. Every single time I start my F82 I get chills and thank God I live in a country where this is possible. I suspect that holds true no matter what generation you own.

Have a safe enjoyable Independence Day weekend.

It's all relative isn't it

That's why I say it was the perfect balance, yeh it was firmer than an e36 on 45 series sidewalls, but it wasn't overtly firm or harsh like the f80

The rasp on the e46 literally ruins the car. It sounds like something is broke. It sounds cheap. Really bad noise.

I’d mod mind but dropping 2000 bucks nets you 10hp.

Mine is vert. And thank good. Otherwise I wouldn’t drive it compared to my f80. There would be literally no circumstance where I’d drive an e46 over a f80

Relative it is! I only think the F8X is more harsh when in Sport +, but it's not overly harsh to me. Sport mode strikes a nice balance.

Blame your US spec

We got the euro spec and it sounded as intended

Likewise we got the euro spec e36, and the s50 performed as intended

Only 1 of these 5 was available in North America as designed in full boat spec ... and that is why the 2018 M3 CS is the overall best of all compared.

Funny, how the 1M usually ends up the winner in back to back comparisons, yet somehow Bimmerpost members who have probably never driven one declare it overrated, claiming the rarity as the only redeeming quality.
Have you ever watched this video? Back when both cars were new the 1M came up just short to the V8M3 with both driver/reviewers agreeing. Interesting that most recent reviews put 1M atop. If BMW made 25,000 1Ms and only made 700 V8M3s people would be giving both their left and right testicles for the M3. Rarity does play a part IMO. Not taking anything away from the 1M

and no I've never driven one.
